Spurs could see £87m bid accepted to sign Frank’s new version of Mbeumo
Tottenham Hotspur entered a new era last summer, throwing old narratives into the dustbin when they defied the odds and beat Manchester United in Bilbao to lift the Europa League trophy.
But Thomas Frank has a lot to do if he is to succeed at the helm, with the general mood one of discontent after reaching the halfway point of his first campaign in the hot seat at the bottom of the N17.
Those at Tottenham undoubtedly feel they are cut from the same cloth as those at the top of the Premier League pyramid, but there is a gap in tangible success that needs to be filled.
These things take time, but even Frank would admit that his team’s attacking style hasn’t been good enough this year.
Tottenham are lining up a new striker
Tottenham have already bid farewell to Brennan Johnson, who was sold to Crystal Palace in a £35m deal last week. It was Johnson, 24, who scored the winner in the Europa League final, but he has been well below standards this season, lacking energy, momentum and conviction in his game.
Now, after Mohamed Quddus suffered a hamstring injury in the recent league draw against Sunderland, the need for quality has become widespread. In the creative department, James Madison and Dejan Kulusevski are still out.
According to Ben Jacobs, Tottenham are prepared to battle a host of continental superpowers for RB Leipzig prodigy Jan Diomande, after learning they would have to make a €100m (converts to around £87m) bid for his signature this month.
However, the clubs feel an agreement could be reached for a fee closer to €60m (£51m) during the summer transfer window.
Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas has since reiterated Tottenham’s interest, stressing that those close to the Ivorian international believe he has surpassed the level of many current Premier League promotions.
Why Yann Diomande thrives for Frank
Frank left Brentford with Bryan Mbeumo over the summer, although the Cameroonian striker ended up at Old Trafford after a prolific season in the Premier League.
The right winger has been one of the brightest sparks of Manchester United’s campaign, but he misses Frank’s system, so well woven into Gtech. Diomande Mbeumo could become the new Danish coach at Tottenham.
He may only be 19-years-old, but Diomande has been impressing in the Bundesliga this season, having arrived from Leganés in La Liga last year.
It’s not just clinical performance in front of goal, but Diomande also ranks in the top 3% of his positional peers across Europe for progressive carries, top 12% for tackles won, and top 1% for ball recoveries per 90, according to FBref.
Ball recovery is determined by the number of loose balls a player recovers.
He is still very young, but there are already similarities between the teenager and Mbomo, who has scored 20 goals in the Premier League but has done so much more for Brentford.

Mbeumo has been a good asset for Manchester United, but is yet to revive his form under Frank’s wing. At Brentford, he was a solid finisher, but he was also a solid and consistent team player in the right direction.
Diomande shares traits with him in this regard, as he is able to bring the complete package to his side. It is this mastery of perfection that journalist Bence Boxak described as a “generational talent.”
Diomande is still very young. However, there is something special about this goal-scoring winger, who may realize his Premier League potential if he lifts Frank’s line-up at Tottenham, becoming an Mbeumo-like talisman.
Currently working his way through the Africa Cup of Nations with the Elephants, he has been formidable and exciting as he moves up and down the left wing.
Tottenham won the Europa League last season, but Frank needs to ensure that victory, under Ange Postecoglou, does not become a millstone around his neck.
Diomande would be something of an ambitious move to secure Spurs’ future at the top of the tree, as he grows into a star who not only rivals Mbeumo as Frank’s biggest star as manager, but surpasses him.
