Man United are aware of Solskjær’s intention to return to the club

Manchester United understand that club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be open to a return to Old Trafford, even on a short-term six-month contract, as the club re-evaluates its direction following the sacking of Ruben Amorim.

Solskjaer is understood to be keen to return to the dugout as a caretaker, according to Fabrizio Romano.

His willingness to help has not gone unnoticed by Carrington’s senior figures, especially at a time when stability and familiarity are prioritized over long-term experiences.

Manchester United begin the internal process today to evaluate short-term options and then a new permanent manager from June.

Amorim leaves Old Trafford with United occupying sixth place in the English Premier League, a position that does not live up to the club’s ambitions.

Their domestic campaign was further undermined by an embarrassing League Cup exit at the hands of Grimsby Town, a result that exacerbated concerns about the team’s mentality, structure and overall identity.

Performance was inconsistent throughout the season, as the team struggled to adapt to Amorim’s tactical demands and failed to show clear progress.

Behind the scenes, the situation is becoming increasingly unacceptable. The Portuguese coach reportedly suffered a complete breakdown in relations with the club’s management, most notably with technical director Jason Wilcox.

Disagreements over recruitment strategy, squad balance and long-term planning ultimately eroded trust, leaving United with no choice but to act decisively.

So Solskjaer’s name has re-emerged as a familiar and reassuring option. The Norwegian knows the club well, knows its culture, its expectations and the pressures that come with managing one of world football’s biggest organisations.

He also maintains strong relationships with many of the staff behind the scenes and recognizes the importance of reconnecting the team with the club’s traditional values, often referred to as the ‘United DNA’.

While there is no guarantee that Solskjaer will be offered the role, sources suggest that he is viewed internally as a safe hand capable of steadying the ship until a permanent appointment is made in the summer.

His previous tenure, which included a second-place finish in the league and a run to the Europa League final, still carries weight within the club’s decision-making circles.
