Three of the world’s largest dairy companies are recalling and banning batches of infant formula due to possible contamination with cerulide, a toxin that can cause nausea and vomiting.
The pollution scare began with Nestlé and spread on Wednesday to the French groups Danone and Lactalis.
Nestlé recalled batches of baby nutrition products from dozens of countries earlier this month due to possible cereulide contamination.

A judicial investigation is underway in France into whether there is a link between Nestlé milk and the death of a child, with the Agriculture Ministry saying results are expected in about 10 days.
Last week, the Singapore food Agency ordered the precautionary recall of a range of Danone’s Thai-origin Dumex Dulac 1 and Nestle’s Swiss-origin NAN HA1 SupremePro after the presence of cerulide was discovered.
Lactalis said on Wednesday that its nutrition unit is recalling batches of infant formula in 18 countries due to the presence of cerulide in an ingredient sourced from a supplier.

“All infant formula producers in France and the world are likely to be affected by the delivery of non-compliant raw materials from the same manufacturer, which led to the recall of Nestlé and Lactalis,” a French agriculture ministry official told Reuters.
The supplier of the contaminated arachidonic acid, or ARA, is Dutch, according to a Lactalis spokesman, who ruled it out Amsterdam-listed dsm-firmenich said none of its products were affected by Nestlé’s recall.

While ARA was sold by a Dutch company, it was sourced from a producer in China, according to a French agriculture ministry official, who declined to reveal the names of any company.
Nestlé also identified quality concerns at one of its factories in the Netherlands and suspended sourcing ARA oil from the supplier.
Reuters contributed to this report.
