Michelle Obama Details ‘Constant Work’ In Marriage To Barack

Mrs Obama recently got candid about her 33-year marriage to the former US President, revealing that they had to make a constant effort to keep their marriage going.

Amid divorce rumors swirling around the high-profile couple, they seem to be going strong and have even come forward to publicly address the rumors and confirm that they are not true.

During the revealing discussion, the former first lady highlighted her marriage to Barack, noting that, like any other marriage, it is still a work in progress.

The 62-year-old writer revealed that she and her husband realized that even though they were married to each other, they ultimately did not “control” each other. Instead, they work on themselves as individuals, before coming together as “whole people.”

Michelle also revealed that they went through therapy, and it helped strengthen their connection even more.

“We were in couples therapy. I believe in the practice of having those conversations with objective people who help you understand those things, and it’s a steady, ongoing work,” she said.

The former First Lady also stressed the importance of focusing on self-empowerment as a way to improve oneself outside of a relationship.

She added: “Start working on your health. Start feeling strong within yourself. Start practicing self-esteem… Work on being as complete as possible, because you can’t control who will love you, who will like you, who will give you a job, who will see the way you want people to see you, because everyone has their own things.”

The couple slammed divorce rumors last year

Michelle’s candid revelation comes months after she and her husband addressed divorce rumors during another candid conversation.

In July 2025, The Blast reported that Barack and Michelle talked about their marriage during an episode of the “IMO” podcast.

Michelle noted that rumors were spreading quickly, especially when she and her husband weren’t together every waking moment. “When we’re not [in the same room]“People think we’re divorced,” she joked.

At the same time, she declared her undying love for Barack, saying that there had never been a time in her marriage when she thought about “giving up” on “her man.”

She admitted that while they had their “hard times,” there were also their “fun times,” and she ultimately became a better person as a result of her marriage to Barack.

While Michelle was aware of the divorce rumors, Barack was happily in the dark. He revealed that while the rumors were making headlines, he was not aware of the public’s perception about his marriage.

“These are the things I miss, right? So I don’t even know what’s going on,” he said. “And then someone will remind me of that, and I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?'”

Just as the Obamas stepped forward to clear the air on divorce speculation, they were also honest about the challenges they face as a couple.

Last year, Michelle appeared on an episode of Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” radio show, during which she talked about her struggle to agree on a thermostat setting with her husband.

“Sometimes I get into bed and I’m cold. Other times, it’s like, ‘Oh my God, take my skin off,'” she recalled to The Blast.
