Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones mocked for ‘Attoney General’ typo

Virginia’s new Attorney General Jay Jones, who was sworn in, drew rapid ridicule online Thursday after his office issued a statement referring to him as “Attorney General,” a mistake that critics seized on as a symbol of his first big move in office.

The error appeared in a graphic accompanying Jones’ ad defending the in-state tuition law for undocumented students.

Former Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, Jones’ predecessor, used a lighter tone in a post that quickly gained traction online.

“Calm down, guys,” Miyares wrote on X, along with a screenshot of the errors circled in red. “Maybe an employee was saying ‘Hi, Tony’ with a Jersey accent?”

The Virginia Republican Party took a harder hit, saying it “took an entire day to fix this,” and suggesting the error went on for too long.

The Republican National Lawyers Association (RNLA) mocked Jones’ error and the timing of the correction.

“Jay Jones is suffering,” the RNLA posted. “This time he moved so quickly to change the letterhead from his latest embarrassment that he forgot how to spell his new address.”

Jim Geraghty, National Review’s senior editor, argued that the typo barely registered compared to Jones’ broader record.

“The thing is, the misspelling of ‘lawyer’ probably isn’t even in the 200 worst things Jay Jones has ever emailed,” Geraghty quipped.

Other users chimed in, including one account that joked that Jones was a “Center for Quality Learning grad student.”

There is now a newly updated post on Jones’ official government X page, and the typo in the graphic has been deleted.

Jones began his term under intense scrutiny after facing backlash on the campaign trail over resurfaced text messages in which he fantasized about the death of political rival House Speaker Todd Gilbert and his children.

Despite the controversy, Jones was elected in what was considered a blue wave election last November alongside Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger.

The typo appeared to overshadow Jones’ announcement that he was moving to defend Virginia’s in-state tuition law, positioning the decision as resistance to the Trump administration.

“On Day One, I promised Virginians that I would resist the Trump Administration’s attacks on our commonwealth, our institutions of higher education, and most importantly — our students,” Jones said in the statement. “Virginians deserve leaders who put them first, and that is exactly what my office will continue to do.”

Critics argued that the typo undermined Jones’ message, and the error quickly became an easy target amid a contentious battle over in-state tuition and immigration policy.

When contacted by Fox News Digital, Jones’ office did not acknowledge the typo.

“In his first week in office, Attorney General Jay Jones began working to protect the commonwealth from Donald Trump’s actions that would raise costs for Virginia families and to defend the rights of Virginians from attacks by the Trump Administration,” a spokesperson for the attorney general wrote in an email to Fox News Digital. “He acted quickly to prevent wrongdoing and stand up for the people of Virginia. Attorney General Jones has already achieved victories on affordability and accountability while achieving real results for the Commonwealth.”
