Martin Short’s Big Blunder Nearly Ruined Selena Gomez’s Wedding

Legendary comedian and actor Martin Short She made a huge mistake with her friend and co-star Selena GomezA wedding that almost ruined the celebration. Fortunately, the problem was quickly resolved, and what could have been a disaster turned into a funny story.

In a guest appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” On January 21, Short shared a funny story that happened at his “Only Murders in the Building” co-star Gomez’s wedding. Short recounted that the wedding was “beautiful” and “perfect” until the reception.

Short was sitting with other teammates enjoying the celebration. But a few hours later, his co-star Steve Martin said goodbye. The celebration is not over, as Gomez and his new husband, Benny Blanco, have not cut the cake yet. He saw a small heart-shaped cake next to their table, and proceeded to cut a slice to serve to Martin, assuming that cakes were served for each section at the reception.

“I cut the wedding cake on one side and cut it on the other and then all the people in our group shouted, ‘Marty!'” Short said.

A big part of the wedding was the couple cutting a piece of the wedding cake, but Short went ahead and did it for Gomez and Blanco without them knowing. He tried to fix it with his fork, but when that didn’t work, he turned to fellow guest Paul Rudd and asked: “Shall we leave then?”

Fortunately, they did not have to resort to the French director. They caught the attention of the wedding coordinator, who alerted the chef. The chef was shocked but managed to solve the problem. “They did surgery, but it ended up being a Hollywood wedding cake, which was beautiful, but now a little bit of work has been done,” Short joked.

Gomez and Blanco began dating in 2023, and tied the knot on September 27, 2025, in Santa Barbara, California. The ceremony was attended by the couple’s friends and family, including many big names in the entertainment industry.

Aside from Short, Martin and Rudd, other big-name attendees included Ed Sheeran, Paris Hilton, Taylor Swift, Camila Cabello, Zoe Saldaña, SZA, and Cara Delevingne. DJ Mark Ronson provided the music, while rapper and singer Lil Dicky served as emcee, he reported Us Weekly.

A day before the ceremony, Short and Martin, stars of Gomez’s “Only Murders in the Building,” gave a hilarious speech while expressing how much they had grown to love the bride over the five years of working with her.

Short has built a strong, genuine relationship with Gomez outside of their work. Short describes the singer as his “bonus child” and also refers to himself and Martin as the singer’s “weird uncles”.

In an interview with number In 2025, Gomez shared what it was like working with Short and Martin. “I just enjoy their company. Even when I’m sitting on set waiting for something to happen and they’re playing a game, there’s a comfort in that, and I feel protected and safe around them,” she said.

Gomez also gushed over her co-stars in an Instagram post, writing that the two gentlemen were the “kindest, kindest, warmest, strongest influences” in her life. She added, “You have shown me a level of sophistication, intellect, and humor that is not easy to find anymore. You guys are my best friends forever.”
