president Trump confirmed that his administration is “taking everything back” in the wake of the Minneapolis shooting that led to the death of 37-year-old nurse Alex J. Pretty.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Trump stopped short of confirming whether the federal agent who fired the fatal shots on January 24 acted appropriately.

“We are looking and reviewing everything and we will come out with determination,” Trump told the outlet as questions mounted about the incident and the city’s broader immigration operation.

The officer’s operation was targeting Jose Huerta Chuma, an undocumented immigrant with a criminal history including domestic assault due to intentional conflict, bodily harm, disorderly conduct and driving without a valid license.

Federal officials initially claimed that Pretty approached the agents with a 9mm handgun and resisted disarming them.

Videos and eyewitness accounts from bystanders circulating online have raised questions about that version of events and whether Pretty was threatening officers when he was shot.

“I don’t like any shooting. I don’t like it,” Trump said, adding that Peretti was carrying a “very powerful rifle, fully loaded, with two magazines… and that’s not good either.”

Trump also linked the federal presence in Minnesota to what he described as the state’s sprawling welfare fraud scandal, arguing that immigration enforcement was necessary to address broader abuses.

“It’s the biggest scam anyone has ever seen,” the president said.

The fraud allegations in the state were a key part of the administration’s need to ramp up federal operations there.

Pretty’s shooting in Minneapolis also marked the second death that occurred in a standoff between federal immigration officers and civilians in the city.

Renee Judd was shot and killed on January 7 by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during an unrelated operation.

This incident sparked protests and highlighted the role of ICE in local law enforcement actions.

“At some point we will leave. We did, they did a great job,” Trump said, without offering a time frame for when customers might leave.

“We’re going to leave a different group of people out there because of financial fraud,” he told the outlet.

“No one, including President Trump, wants to see people get shot or hurt,” Leavitt said, urging officials to work more closely with the administration in dealing with undocumented individuals living in the country illegally.
