Trump extends EU tariff deadline to July 9 as trade negotiations accelerate

The European Union has agreed on rapid track talks with the United States after President Donald Trump’s threats to more sanctions against the region.

The European Commission announced on Monday after a phone call between Trump and European Union President Ursula von der Lin. Last week, Trump threatened to impose another 50 % tariff on European imports starting from June 1, but now agreed to delay the plan until July 9 to give time negotiations.

“They agreed to track negotiations quickly and stay in close contact,” the committee spokeswoman Paula Penho told reporters on Monday.

“These negotiations are complicated, and therefore it takes some time,” she added. “There is now a new driving force for negotiations and we will take them from there.”
