DIA employee could face possible death penalty for sharing classified information

A government employee in Virginia, accused of trying to share secret information with a foreign country, was being held pending a detention session, and he may face a lifelong prison, or even death, depending on the details of the case against him, according to the US Department of Justice (doj).

Judge William Fitzpatrick, who is based in Virginia, ordered his 28 -year -old Nathan Lach to retain a detention session on June 4.

He claimed that Laatsch tried to transfer information or national defense documents classified to a foreign government.

Depending on the details of the case, Laatsch faces “any term, years, life … or even death,” according to the prosecutor of the Ministry of Justice Gordon Kromberg.

Lach, an information technology specialist working for the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) since 2019, has appeared before the court on Friday wearing street clothes, which was supposed to be the same clothes that he was wearing when he was arrested the day before.

He was arrested after the FBI received advice in March that someone was ready to provide secret information to a friendly foreign government.

Laatsch was a civilian employee in the DIA’s internal threat department and carried a higher -sinai security permit, according to the Ministry of Justice.

An email to the FBI said that the person – who was later identified as Laatsch – did not agree or correspond to the “Trump administration” values ​​and will be ready to share the classified information he can access, including “complete intelligence products, some inaccurate intelligence, and other various classified documents.”

The Ministry of Justice said that Laatsch is communicating with the Undersecretary of the FBI, who is believed to be a foreign government official, several times and will confirm that he is ready to share his classified information to a notebook on his office. He claimed that he distributed the information from his work space several times over a period of three days in the preparation.

The FBI created an operation in the North Virginia Park, where Laatsch had to deposit secret information to “restore the foreign government”, according to the Ministry of Justice. It has been observed by the FBI in or about 1 May, an element is deposited at the specified location.

On May 7, after Laatsch learned that the thumb engine had been recovered, he claimed that he had sent a message to the secret agent who appeared to say he was looking for something in exchange for information.

The next day, he determined that he was interested in “nationality for your country” because he did not expect things to improve in America “in the long run.” He also claims that he said that he “does not oppose other compensation”, but not in a place where he needs “material compensation”.

Laatsch was informed on May 14 by the FBI agent that the “foreign government” is ready for additional secret information. Between May 15 and May 27, he copied more information and started removing it from the building by folding the notes and hiding them in his clothes.

On Thursday, Laatsch arrived at a prior location in northern Virginia to drop information to the “foreign country”. He was arrested as soon as the FBI received documents.
