Google scrubs mentions of ‘diversity’ and ‘equity’ from responsible AI team webpage

Google has quietly updated the web page for the Rai-HCT technology, the team accused of conducting research in the integrity of artificial intelligence, fairness, and explanation, to clean the signals of “diversity” and “fairness”.

Use a previous version of the page like “marginalized societies”, “various”, “representative groups, an incomplete representation” and “property rights” to describe the work of the Rai-HC team. That language was removed, or in some cases it was replaced with less specific formulation (for example, “all”, “Varied” and “many” instead of “varied”)

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The changes, which were monitored by the control body group, the Midas project, come after the deletion of a similar language from the site of granting the founders of startups. In early February, the company said that it will eliminate the goals of employing diversity and reviewing its diversity programs, property and inclusive rights (Dei).

Google is among the many large technology companies that have retracted the Dei initiatives, as the Trump administration is targeting as it is “illegal”. Amazon and Meta have followed DEI measures over the past few months, and Openai has recently removed signals from diversity and inclusion from a web page about employment practices. Apple, however, recently paid a proposal for the shareholders to end its Dei programs.

Many of these companies, including Google, have contracts with federal agencies.
