Getting employees back to the office is at an inflection.jpeg
Four years after the epidemic sent people to work, companies were intensifying their desire to return to the office. However, for many workers, flexible work arrangements are a must.
Peter Kabli, a professor of administration at the Warton School at the University of Pennsylvania, has a new book that participated in his book with Rania Niemeh, a strategic expert in the workplace. “In praise of the office: the limits of hybrid and remote work” places the issue of work for employers who pay workers to return to the office.
Below excerpts were edited from my last conversation with Cappelli:
Kerry Hannon: Why was the issue of work in the office stronger?
Peter Capli: We have passed during this period as there were great discussions about working remotely and many companies continued in different types of remoteness, but mainly hybrid. At the present time, recognition grows through employers that have not succeeded well.
When the business returned and things became a little more natural, it became easier to start seeing some defects. Not only was it enough to keep the wheels continuous.
We are at this reflection point now where companies must really decide whether they want to restore people. The longer you are waiting, the more it is difficult for people to return without a big battle.
Currently, people may say, “I will resign if you have to return to the office,” but it turns out that they do not mean that. The reason, of course, is one thing to say that you will resign; It is another thing to stay away from the salary.
What is wrong with arranging hybrid work?
People not only come. This may be the biggest factor. There is an increasing awareness that people are never there on anchor days. If you want it to your company, you must manage this attendance.
This is on the shoulders of the managers themselves. It is not a matter that we do not think you can have a hybrid work, but if you are going to do so, this requires a lot of effort by management.
Many employers have been suffering from work success not long ago. What has changed?
The only thing that changed is to reduce the labor market. It is not the case that people are currently moving because there are no very large jobs. The number of jobs that are presented with a kind of distant probability is a decrease.
At the level of the CEO, immediately after the epidemic who were happy, things are still working at all. The expectations were really low. What has been changed is that CEOs now believe that we are losing something, and the employee’s resistance has weakened to return to the office. For this reason we see the batch now.
Until recently, it was resistance from the employees and kicking the box on the road. Employers do not want their employees. The labor market was narrow. In fact, work was a short -term solution during the epidemic that ended up causing a long -term problem.
What is the convincing feature of personal work?
There is value in human interaction, what we learn from each other, and the cooperation that we can obtain in solving problems, motives and commitment that come from being around others.
Our view is not that you should be in the office all the time – but social ties are very important. When your career started for the first time, imagine what was the case if no one was in the office. It will be completely lost.
If you are considering how we got to know the office’s work, we learn through viewing. Learn what the organization’s values are. Learn it from the talks in the office. You can see how the president interacts with different requests and different problems.
With your progress, you got your ear on the ground, and you have the opportunity to raise your hand and stadium and have some effect. You can capture the president between meetings and scroll along a little information, and develop relationships with people where you can solve problems.
If you are in the office and need help from someone, which is urgent, you are just around the corner and hold your head in their door and ask them a quick question.
This is the type of things that we miss when we move to a distance control system – as well as the general truth that people are activated by working with people.
With a remote work, people also spend more time at unnecessary meetings. A lot of these things can be fixed, but the problem is that it is not.
What is the only thing that can give us work in the office that most people do not think about?
You will have friends. You build your social network. Remote workers have social networks that shrink, and this contributes to the epidemic of unity and the absence of social ties.
Is distant work as large as it seems in terms of the number of people who work in this way?
no. In Europe, for example, where employees have always had more strength, I thought that working from a distance would remain. He did not. Most of everyone returned to the office. In Asia, most everyone returned to the office. In the United States, the best data we obtained from the government, which is now a little dated, but no one believes that it has risen since then is that more than 70 % of employers have no remote or hybrid workers.
“We are at this point of turn now where companies must really decide whether they want to restore people from ever,” said Peter Cappeli, a professor of administration at the Warton School at the University of Pennsylvania. (The photo is courtesy from Peter Capli)
Now this looks amazing. But remember that most employers are young. Work from remote and mixed work, in particular, a large city, the phenomenon of the large company. Not everywhere, not in all jobs. They are only white coronation.
The future of work is definitely not far? correct?
This is correct. From time to time, someone appears a list of employers who have a completely remote job. Companies that start away from distance. By the way, the thing that surprised me about those companies if I look at them, and they have a lot of rules on how to behave, and it is completely different from the office. It takes a lot of time and energy more than we have provided.

What is your thinking thinking for employers about how to deal with the new work world?
If you choose a distance or hybrid, no good results do themselves. You can make it work, but it requires more time and effort to manage, more rules, more practices, and more driving.
And for employees?
Be very practical. If you start your career, move to the office. Be careful in taking remote positions because I think it will not go long before you start the financial manager in the question, “Why is Peter consider an employee at all? We don’t see him. Why don’t you make him a contractor?
