New House GOP bill would make US citizenship test English-only

There are many different ingredients for the American citizenship exam. Although most parts are English only, the civil test-in which the applicant is asked 10 out of 100 possible questions about the history of the United States and the government-can currently be taken in other languages, provided that certain criteria are met.

The Fine bill would eliminate these exceptions.

The current law states that people between the ages of 50 or older who have lived in the United States are allowed as a permanent resident for at least 20 years to take the civil part in another language.

People between the ages of 55 years or older who have always been residing in the United States for at least 15 years have the same exemption.

Both groups of people must bring an English -language translator and their mother tongue for the exam.

The draft law is likely to be opposed by immigrant calling groups.

The Fine’s proposal comes after President Donald Trump signed an executive order in March to naming the English language as an official language for the country – the first time in its history that the United States has done so.
