US Tech Giants Race to Spend Billions in UK AI Push

Microsoft and Nvidia Plans for investing up to $ 45 billion in the British economy, in a move that would enhance the construction of more data centers as well as research and development in artificial intelligence.

This investment comes at a time when US president Donald Trump is traveling to Britain, where he is expected to announce a technical deal in the United States alongside UK Prime Minister Kiir Starmer.

As part of the agreement, Microsoft has committed to investing $ 30 billion in Amnesty International’s infrastructure over the next four years. The company claims that this is the largest financial commitment it provided in the United Kingdom and will constitute more than two -thirds of the total investment announced in the United Kingdom this week, at the time of Trump’s visit.

“We are focusing on British pounds, not the empty promises of technology,” Brad Smith, Vice President and President of Microsoft, told reporters at a virtual press conference before the announcement today. “We will be good for every cent of this investment.” Half of the money will go to expanding the capital – “All new funds, all new investments”, as Smith – when the other half has made efforts such as a partnership with the NSCale Data Center business, to finance and use its facilities.

For its part, NVIDIA has pledged to spend up to $ 15 billion on AI’s research and development efforts in the United Kingdom. The chips maker will not invest directly in building infrastructure, and instead he behaves through his Coreweave and NSCALE partners.

This advertisement comes alongside a new joint venture from NVIDIA, NSCALE and Openai today, which plans to “enhance the sovereign account capabilities in the United Kingdom” through a partnership of Amnesty International’s infrastructure called Stargate UK. Sam Altman, CEO of Openai and CEO of Nvidia Jensen Huang, traveled with Trump to the UK during his visit this week.

“Stargate UK guarantees that the leading artificial intelligence models in Openai can work on the power of local computing in the UK for the United Kingdom,” Openai said in a statement. Openai will provide up to 8,000 graphics processing units in the first quarter of 2026 with the possibility of expanding 31,000 graphics processing units over time. As part of the agreement, Openai says that NSCAE is scheduled to expand its capacity through a number of sites in the United Kingdom, including Cobalt Park in Newcastle, which will be part of the newly designated Amnesty International growth area in the northeast.

“This historical commitment of NSCale shows how the UK can build the future of artificial intelligence, with our partners from the United States,” NSCAE CEO Josh Payne said in a statement. “Only by building an infrastructure of artificial intelligence on a global level, we will remain able to compete in the world race.”

When asked to describe Microsoft’s relationship with NSCAE, Smith simply said, “We write the check and spend money.”

Smith was quick to claim that the company did not get a request from the Trump administration to issue an investment advertisement. He said: “We have had many talks with the UK government, including with people in the number 10, as you expect, and that has been going on for months.”
