Assata Shakur, fugitive Black militant and godmother to Tupac, dies in Cuba
Her daughter and Cuban government said that Isa Shakur, a black liberation activist who gave political asylum in Cuba after her escape in 1979 from an American prison where she was serving a life imprisonment for killing a police officer, and her daughter and the Cuban government died.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Cuba said that Shakur, born Joan Deborah Chisiman, died on Thursday in the capital of Havana due to “health conditions and advanced age.” Shakour’s daughter, Kacoya Shakur, confirmed the death of her mother in the Facebook post.
Shakur was a member of the Black Party and the Black Liberation Army, and was a symbol of relations between the United States and Cuba. The American authorities, including President Donald Trump, during his first term, requested their return from the Communist nation for decades.
The FBI has placed Shakur on the list of “the most required terrorists”, but in telling it – and in the minds of its supporters – was a follow -up to crimes she did not commit or had something justified.
From the shooting of the police to the prison break
Shakour and two others participated in a firearm battle with New Jersey State Police forces after the highway stopped on May 2, 1973.

Just as Cuba supported the anti -colonial and left -wing forces in Africa, central and southern America, the Cuban government saw the armed black liberation movement in the United States as part of a global revolutionary conflict.
A member of the New Jersey State Council, Michael Inganamort, who sponsored legislation last year, called on Cuba to hand over Shakur, his regret on Friday that “justice has never served in the meaningless killing in favor of a Vojter soldier.”
Shakur kept in her writings over the years that she had not shot anyone and her hands were in the air when she was injured during the shooting.
In recent years, her writings have become a massive cry during the black life issue, so that opponents have criticized her words as being affected by Marxist and Communist ideology.
“It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win,” Shakur wrote in “Autobiography,” which was originally published in 1988. ”We must love each other and support each other. We have nothing but our chains.

Shakur’s influence extended to the world of music. She was close to the family of late rapper Toubak Shakur, who considered her Arabism.
