How Gladiator 2 Almost Brought Back Russell Crowe’s Maximus

We have been waiting for a long time for a long time to make director Ridley Scott a complement to the best classic in the best of 2000, “Gladiator”. This sequel arrived in late 2024 in the form of “Gladiator II”. Although almost quietly like her predecessor, one of the highest films suffering from it was not commensurate with, and she did this without returning her ex -star, Oscar -winning Cruele in the role of Maximus Disimus Meridazes. This is because Maximus died in the first … but this did not prevent the book from trying to return it anyway.

In an interview with him recently with The Direct, screenwriter Peter Craig revealed that there was, at some point, a scene that would have repeated Crowe Kamximis. This would have happened at the end of the film, and it would have happened through Flashback Flash with Bosius Paul Mescal, who (a warning spoiler) was in fact Ibn Maximus. This is what Craig said about this:

“There was an idea that the Romans could have spoken to your ancestors, and that they had these dead basements under the ground where both people’s tractor, its ashes and bones were buried there, and there was just a really brief scene with Rosel.”

When it is worth it, only two representatives of the “first wrestler” returned in sequel: Kony Nielsen (Lusella) and Derik Jacobi (Senator Jerashos). So it is not as if Crowe was missing in the great reunion. However, it is easy to know why Craig and Skutt are considered at least this option.

For better or worse, Maximus is very big shadow on its continuation, although Crowe does not actually appear in the movie. There have been different versions of the sequel floating over the years, but Scott’s hair was finally the time to make “Gladiator II”. Do this without the people who made this original success a long.

Many other writers, along with Scott, formulated the story that we have seen reveal in continuation. The director ended up being a great fan of how he appeared, as he has already announced plans to restore “Gladiator 3” with Paul Missal’s return. Craig feels, for his part, that they made the correct call to leave the flashback scene outside the movie:

“I think they may have made the right decision not to use it. But I was on that with Ridley [Scott] For a while … I gave them a kind of big things, chose some things from them, and I think they left a lot of right things. “

Whether or not, the completion was a satisfactory follow -up, to a large extent, a matter of individual taste. There is likely to have a veil from Crowe that has moved the needle a lot in both cases, but perhaps I felt somewhat forced. “Gladiator II” was criticized for its lack of historical accuracy, but again, Scott does not start to make an accurate historical epic.
