1 opening, 13,451 applicants: Thousands apply for a single Blinkit job in Bengaluru in just one day

The Blinkit function put a function for the software development engineer in Bangaluru, social media, after the user shared screenshots showing the huge size of the applications he received. Within just 24 hours, the list attracted 13451 of the applicants, which sparked discussions about the status of the labor market.

The viral post on X (previously Twitter) showed that 74 % of the applicants were professionals at the entry level, while 13 % of the candidates were at the top level. In terms of education, 86 % obtained a Bachelor’s degree, and 12 % got a master’s degree.

The overwhelming response sparked strong reactions online, as users discuss whether the flood of applications is due to workers’ demobilization, economic uncertainty, or an increase in new graduates.

“Just start our own company; at this stage, you have a better chance to succeed in getting a job.”

Some users were reflected in the recruitment process itself. One of the recruits commented, “I tried to employ people, trust me when I say 50 % blindly, 30 % do not even have the right skills, 15 % do not pick up your calls, and 5 % will reject offers in the end.”

Another person commented: “It is not a big button and easy to apply has done this task. Until 5 percent of these people will not think seriously if they call for the interview, they only apply everything that exists.”

Amid the fierce labor market competition, one of the users looking for job seekers advised to take advantage of personal networks instead of relying on group applications. “Get a person’s referral in a higher post is something you can do. Play smart, not difficult.”
