Zahran Mamdani and other top New York City officials could see their salaries increase under a proposed 16% pay hike that council members hope to move forward with soon, according to reports.
The bill introduced by Assemblywoman Nantasha Williams, D-Queens, would increase members’ salaries from $148,500 to $172,500, the New York Post reported Tuesday.
If passed, the pay increase would also apply to the new mayor, public defender, comptroller and township mayors.
That would raise Mamdani’s pay to nearly $300,000, up from the current $258,000, the agency said.
New York City Mayor-elect Mamdani asks supporters for $4 million to fund the transition, and pledges that there will be no wealthy donors.

Other senior officials, such as the comptroller, public defender, and mayors, will see similar increases.
The legislation will be introduced this week with a hearing by the end of the year, allowing the next City Council to vote in January for faster approval. Council members last received a raise in 2016.
Interestingly, it was Mamdani who created a platform focused on affordability for working-class New Yorkers.

The Ugandan-born 34-year-old pledged free busing, a rent freeze on rent-stabilized apartments, universal child care and city-run grocery stores during his campaign for New York City mayor.
He also campaigned for a gradual increase in the minimum wage to $30 per hour by 2030.
Mamdani said these proposals would be funded primarily through increased taxes on wealthy individuals and large corporations.
As a state Assembly member in 2022, Mamdani also voted to increase salaries for state legislators.

New York City’s latest pay raise plans were originally headed to Mayor Eric Adams’ office, but that timeline has been pushed back, according to the newspaper.
“If we had a hearing on the bill this year, we wouldn’t need a hearing on it next year. It’s already been considered,” Williams told The Post.

When the outlet asked her if the House would approve the pay raise bill in January, Williams replied: “That’s the goal.”
A source also said the wage hike legislation puts Mamdani in a bind. The source said he may veto the bill or approve a law that “makes New York more accessible to the political class.”
