Newcastle v Tottenham – Line-ups, stats and preview
Newcastle v Tottenham match report
The two sides stuck together in the Premier League standings meet on Tuesday evening, with Newcastle hosting Tottenham at St James’ Park.
The two teams sit in mid-table separated only by goal difference, although their momentum could not be more different.
Newcastle arrives buoyed by a 4-1 win over Everton, while Tottenham continue to drift after their 2-1 home defeat to Fulham.
The win over Merseyside ended Eddie Howe’s side’s six-match home drought, with Malik Thiaw scoring one minute later and adding another later.
Lewis Mailey and Nick Woltemade also scored before half-time, giving Newcastle the impetus they needed after their Champions League disappointment last week.
What will please Howe most is the model at home. Newcastle have won six consecutive league games at St James’ Park, scoring at least two goals in each game.
They are also unbeaten in 10 consecutive Premier League matches in midweek at home. Spurs, as history repeatedly shows, rarely enjoy a visit to Tyneside.
Tottenham’s woes deepened at the weekend. Two early Fulham goals left Thomas Frank’s side dazed, and despite a powerful shot from Mohamed Quddus later, the response was not enough.
Booing rang out around Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after a third successive defeat and a 10th home league loss this year – a mark the team last reached more than two decades ago.
Oddly enough, Tottenham have been more comfortable on their travels this season, taking 13 of the last 18 points available away from home.
However, St James’ Park was not kind to them. Newcastle have beaten Tottenham in six of their previous seven matches, including the last four in a row, and Tottenham have not left this ground with a win since October 2021.
Team news for the Newcastle vs Tottenham match
Goalkeeper Nick Pope missed the win over Everton with a thigh injury and is unlikely to return in time. He is still sidelined, along with Kieran Trippier, Yoan Wissa, Harrison Ashby and Will Osola. Sven Botman has a back problem and will be assessed late.
Lewis Miley impressed with a goal and an assist at the weekend and is expected to keep his place, although Howe could rotate in the wide positions with Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon pressing to start.
Tottenham welcome back Cristian Romero after suspension, a much-needed boost to a defense lacking stability.
He should come straight in to replace Kevin Danso. However, Tottenham still travel north with a large injury list: James Maddison, Radu Dragosin, Kota Takai, Yves Bissouma, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke are all out.
Frank could make further changes going forward, with Richarlison, Archie Gray, Joao Palinha and Destiny Udoji all vulnerable to being dropped.

Tottenham’s away numbers give them a small glimmer of hope, but St James’ Park has not been kind to them, and Newcastle look sharper and more confident at home.
With Tottenham continuing to struggle to create chances and defensive lapses on the rise, the home side may enjoy another productive evening.
