Manchester United will finish fifth in the Premier League if they beat Newcastle at home on Friday – but coach Ruben Amorim is making no secret of the impact of losing Bruno Fernandes after replacing the captain at half-time in their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa last Sunday.
The United playmaker is suffering from a muscle injury and Amorim explained how the Portuguese international’s influence extends beyond creativity.

Newcastle won one of the last four league matches, but secured eighth place with the win, and will advance above its competitor to seventh place if it wins by more than one goal.
“Consistent winning has eluded us and we have put together a run of wins this season,” said manager Eddie Howe, adding that he was “really happy” with his side’s “majority” 2-2 draw at home to Chelsea last Saturday.

“It reflects what you see with your eyes. They were competitive. Offensively, they have some good threats.

Casemiro is available after suspension in United’s midfield, with academy player Jack Fletcher making his debut against Villa, with Kobe Maino injured and centre-back Lisandro Martinez replacing Bruno.
Centre-backs Harry Maguire (thigh) and Matthijs de Ligt (full-back) will be absent due to short-term injuries. Midfielder Amad Diallo is with Ivory Coast in the 2025 African Cup of Nations, where player Noussair Mazraoui represents Morocco and striker Brian Mbeumo plays for Cameroon.
First choice goalkeeper Nick Pope could return from a groin injury with Newcastle, but defenders Dan Byrne (ribs/punctured lung), Kieran Trippier (hamstring), Sven Botman (full-back) and Jamaal Lascelles (knee) remain out injured.
Striker William Osula has an ankle problem, and full-back Tino Livramento could be close to returning to training after a knee injury.
“We are waiting for a full clarification and we hope that it is not serious and that he can resume full training very quickly,” Howe said of Livramento. “Hopefully this is good news. There’s a chance.”
