AI Stocks And Bitcoin Investors Suffer Trillion-Dollar Losses

A trillion loss here and a trillion loss there are really starting to add up for investors in ETFs speculative in AI and cryptocurrencies.

The value of AI shares in the Global Meanwhile, the value of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies fell by $700 billion during the month, and has fallen by $900 billion since October 27, according to Coinbase. The outsized magnitude of ETF losses highlights the downside of ETFs tied to such volatile assets — which have been outperforming for a long time.

“With many emerging technology developments, the market often experiences periods of high enthusiasm followed by declines before finding a more sustainable valuation and growth path,” said Todd Rosenbluth, Head of Research at TMX Vetta Fi.

Pain with AI ETFs

For most of 2025, owning AI-powered ETFs has been a huge boon. But that march to the top ended abruptly in November.

The Global That’s been an adjustment for investors who are still up about 27% in ETFs this year. But some individual holdings are slipping.

Artificial intelligence leader Nvidia (NVDA) is one of the ETF’s main holdings at approximately 3% of the portfolio. But shares are down nearly 14% over the month. The company lost $674 billion in market value just this month. The stock fell this month despite announcing quarterly results on November 19 that beat expectations by 3.2%. Nvidia shares are sticking with an RS rating of 87. With analysts expecting earnings growth of 56% in 2026, Nvidia still carries the highest EPS rating of 99.

But Nvidia isn’t the only stock weighing on the AI ETF. Shares of Artificial Intelligence Empowerment Company CoreWeave (CRWV) is down a staggering 47% this month. Fortunately, the stock now represents only 0.4% of ETFs.

Not all AI ETFs are treated equal

Some AI ETFs suffer more or less from Global X’s AI and technology.

During the month, the ARK Autonomous Technology & Robotics ETF (ARKQ) is down more than 14% and Roundhill Geneative AI & Technology (CHAT) is down nearly 13%. The Roundhill ETF is exposed to many pure-play AI companies like Nvidia, which exposes it to the brunt of sector volatility, Rosenbluth says.

Meanwhile, the ROBO Global Robotics and Automation Index ETF (ROBO) is down just 5% this month. The fund’s downside is mitigated because it is “more diversified, with exposure to a broader range of mid-sized companies,” Rosenbluth said.

And the WisdomTree US AI Enhanced Value Fund (AIVL) is surprisingly flat for the month. This is due to the ETF’s deliberate design to also include non-AI companies that would benefit from the use of AI.

The ETF owns companies that are not necessarily directly related to AI technology, e.g Bank of America (Buck) and Exxon Mobil (XOM). “Its performance may hold up better because it is less correlated with the stocks driving the pure AI theme,” Rosenbluth said.

Bitcoin ETFs are also suffering

AI isn’t the only flavor of speculative ETFs being sold. iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) shares collapsed more than 20% in November and are now down more than 7% this year. Gravity is new for Bitcoin ETFs as well.

But that’s where the comparison with AI ETFs ends. “AI is a disruptive technology that is likely to see continued adoption and innovation over the long term,” Rosenbluth said. “Unlike some purely speculative assets, AI has tangible applications, and many related companies have strong fundamentals.”
