US shuts southern border to livestock imports to stop spread of deadly flies

The Trump administration temporarily prohibits livestock, horses, and bisson across ports along the southern border due to the rapid spread of the new global screw (NWS) in Mexico.
US Agricultural Minister of Agriculture (USDA) Brock Rollins announced the comment on the X Publishing on Sunday.
“Because of the threat of the new world worm, I announced the suspension of live imports, horses and bison through the southern border ports to enter immediately,” she wrote. “The last time this destroyed scourge invaded America, it took 30 years to restore our livestock industry. This could not happen again.”

“I have worked closely with the response of NWS; however, it is my duty to take all steps in my control to protect the livestock industry in the United States from this devastating scourge,” Rollins said about her Mexican counterpart. “Protecting our animals and safety from food supplies in our nation is a national security issue of utmost importance. Once we see an increase in monitoring and eradication efforts, and the positive results of these measures, we are still committed to opening the borders to trade livestock. This is not related to politics or punishing Mexico, but rather about food safety and animal safety.”
The United States and Mexico have taken a three -sided approach to the elimination of NWS, which includes field monitoring of education and communication that guarantees prevention, treatment and early discovery. The approach also includes controlling animal movement to reduce the spread of NWS and sterilized insects.

This is not the first time that the need to eliminate NWS. In fact, CDC Centers (CDC) said that NWS was eliminated in the United States in the 1960s and Mexico in the 1970s.
However, the elimination of the deadly worm cost is billions of dollars and took decades.
