Automattic says it will start contributing to WordPress again after pause

WordPress.com The parent company Automattic trend change … again.

In a blog publication entitled “Returning To Core”, which was published Thursday evening, Automatic announced that it will work to cancel its contributions to the WordPress project. This is although he said only last month that the WordPress 6.8 version will be the final main edition of the year 2025.

“After stopping our contributions to re -assembling our ranks and rethinking and planning strategically, we are ready to press play again and return completely to the WordPress project,” says the new blog post. “We are expected to find our contributions to all the greatest songs – WordPress Core, Guetenberg, Playground, OpenVERSE, WordPress.org. This return is a moment of excitement for us because it revolves around continuing the task we always believed in: adding a democratic character to publishing to everyone, everywhere,”.

Automattic says she has learned a lot of stopping in terms of many ways that WordPress is used, and that she is now committed to helping her “growth and prosperity”.

The post also notes that today’s WordPress operates 43 % of the web.

It is unclear what has changed.

However, according to the sources that spoke to Techcrunch, the CEO of Automattic Matt Mullenweg in an internal publication published last night that he wanted to obtain version 6.9 this year with the update of the official and something from the “new artificial intelligence team”. (The latter indicates this week’s announcement that WordPress has been a new team to supervise the development of artificial intelligence projects.)

“I do not think this will happen without our contributions,” the post stated, according to a source familiar with internal discussions.

Those familiar with the existence of more than that, and various theories are presented. Some ask whether Mullenweg has been pressured in this step or if he realized that the decline was not good for his work or his reputation? Others discuss whether this change in the heart relates to the continuous litigation of Automattic with the WPPress hosting company, WP Engine, which Automattic described as a “threat” for the WordPress community and “cancer to WordPress”.

Nobody knows what he believes, and none of the theories of the back channels lined up with the officially announced reason.

Automattic has been requested for additional comment.

Since 2024, Automattic has participated in a legal dispute related to a few, in the opinion of Mullenweg, WP Engine contributes to the WordPress project, despite its size and revenues.

He believes that the hosting company takes advantage of the open source work that WordPress is doing without returning the favor. Mullenweg also claims that the WP engine benefits from the confusion between WordPress and commercial services such as WP Engine. This led him to prevent the company from reaching WordPress.org and Sue in court to use unauthorized brands.

Simply put, the Mullenweg believes that the WP engine should pay a direct license fee or raise its contributions to the open source WordPress project, or should not be allowed to use its brands.

WP Engine replied that he does not believe that he needs a license and that the brands law for automatic control, prosecute automattic in return.

Last month, Automattic delivered 16 % of employees, saying that restructuring was necessary to be more flexible and improved its productivity and profit.
