Best Ways to Use Your FSA and HSA Funds Before They Expire

Share the best ways to use your FSA and HSA funds before they expire.

Hello friends! How are you? I hope your morning is off to a great start! We’re in full vacation mode here; I’m really trying to finish everything this week. I started baking while on vacation but it was all used up, so I’m starting over (and storing some in the garage fridge!).

I’ve also started planning for the new year and content for 2026. I’m so excited for everything coming next year!

For today’s article, I wanted to share some tips on how to use your FSA and HSA funds before they expire, because I know many of you are also in vacation mode and it may not be on your radar. (We don’t have these accounts but it’s something I’m exploring in the new year because we love health basics and lab testing.) I also tend to start with this because it’s the first thing I’ll buy.

The truth is that every year, thousands of people leave money on the table simply because they’re not sure what actually qualifies for HSA and FSA spending.

The good news is that there are many smart, legitimate ways to use these funds to support your health — especially if you’re focused on prevention, inflammation reduction, hormone balance, and long-term health.

I wanted to talk about some of the best ways to use your FSA and HSA money before they expire, including some of my favorite wellness tools, functional health options, and practical purchases that actually move how you feel.

First, a quick refresher: FSA vs. HSA

What is the difference between FSA and HSA?

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

-Usually “use it or lose it” by the end of the year

– Sponsored by the employer

– Covers eligible medical expenses

Health Savings Accounts (HSA)

– Transferring funds from one year to another

– Available with high deductible health plans

– Can be used for many of the same eligible expenses

Always check the rules for your specific plan, but the categories below generally qualify.

(Little tip: You can switch Amazon for FSA/HSA qualification)

1. Functional Health Test (Great Opportunity)

Testing is one of the best uses for FSA/HSA, especially if you suffer from fatigue, inflammation, bowel issues, or hormonal changes.

Qualifying tests may include:

– Food allergy test

– Metals and heavy metals

– Test stress, mood and metabolism

– Gut health and microbiome testing

Brands like EquiLife offer a wide range of at-home functional lab tests that are often FSA/HSA eligible – and these tests can give you clarity instead of guesswork.

If you mean “see what’s really going on,” this is a smart place to spend that money.

2. Support the elimination of toxins and inflammation

Many people wait until January to achieve their health and wellness goals, but using your FSA/HSA funds now can help you start the new year feeling lighter and less sore.

Eligible items may include:

– Detox programs

– Supplements, including magnesium, melatonin, adrenal support, omega-3, and multivitamins.

A structured detox program (like this one from EquiLife) can be a strategic and consistent way to use up funds that may be expiring, especially if inflammation and bloating are ongoing issues for you.

3. Red light therapy and recovery tools

This is where people are often surprised.

Many recovery devices and therapeutic devices are FSA/HSA eligible when designed to support pain relief, inflammation, circulation, or muscle recovery.

Possible eligible items:

– Red light therapy devices

– Infrared or PEMF recovery tools

– Muscle recovery and pain relief devices (like these compression shoes and this foot massager)

Brands like HigherDOSE create wellness tools that support recovery, circulation, and cellular health, and many of their products are generally eligible through the FSA/HSA markets.

If you’re looking to treat red light therapy for skin, joint pain or recovery, this could be a very smart buy at the end of the year.

Here are some of my favorites:

PEMF Go Mat. I use this every day for breathing and meditation, or when I need a little recharge while working on the computer. Use Fitnesssta15.

The famous sauna blanket! This has been a Black Friday gift to myself for years and I still use it at least once a week for stress relief, great sweats, glowing skin, and amazing sleep. Use Fitnesssta15.

Red light face mask. I use this every morning while doing housework or multitasking. It gives my skin an amazing glow and I have noticed a huge difference in the texture of my skin.

Lumebox also accepts FSA/HSA. I use this every day and for many reasons. For energy, focus, mood, inflammation, skin, aches and pains, muscle soreness, fever, all the things.

4. Fitness and movement equipment

Movement is medicine and some fitness equipment qualifies as such.

Commonly eligible items include:

– Resistance gangs

– Dumbbell or kettlebell

-Foam rollers

– Balancing tools

– Stability balls

-Massage guns

If you’re creating a home workout setup or upgrading what you already have, your FSA/HSA funds can often be used to purchase durable medical or fitness equipment that supports physical health.

5. Support sleep and reduce stress

Sleep and stress management are key to hormone, metabolism, and immune health—and many people don’t realize how many tools qualify.

Eligible items may include:

– Sleep aid and support

– Blue light blocking glasses

– Oura ring. I love this thing!

– Some relaxation or recovery tools

– Meditation or biofeedback devices

If poor sleep saps your energy, this is a great category to explore.

6. Everyday health essentials you’ll use anyway

Don’t overlook the basics; They add up quickly.

FSA/HSA Eligible Common Essentials:

– First aid supplies

– Retainer cleaner

– Heating pads or ice bags

– Hand sanitizer

-Thermometers

– My favorite mold-free coffee

– Blood pressure measuring devices

– Glucose monitors (this is the one I use and recommend to clients)

– Smart scale

– Sunscreen (yes even that!)

– Pain relievers and allergy medications that do not require a prescription

– Prescription sunglasses!!! I like mine very much

Storing now can save you money later.

7. Menstrual products, hormones and women’s health

Women often leave a lot of qualifying purchases unused.

Often qualified:

– Menstrual products

– Heating compresses for cramps

– Ovulation and fertility tracking devices

– Some hormone support tools

If you’re focused on hormone balance, this category is worth checking out.

How to Check Eligibility (Quick Tips)

• Look for “FSA/HSA Eligible” labels on product pages

• Use major FSA/HSA online stores or marketplaces

• Keep receipts just in case

• When in doubt, ask your plan administrator

The rules can vary slightly, but many wellness brands now clearly define which products qualify.

If your FSA or HSA funds are about to expire, here’s your reminder:

Use it to invest in your health; Don’t waste them!

Whether it’s functional testing, detox support, recovery tools, or fitness equipment, these purchases can help you feel better now and set you up for a stronger year ahead.

If you’re not sure what will have the most impact on your body, I’m always happy to help brainstorm ideas with you. If you have these accounts and are curious about how you spend your money, please share the details with us!

Have a great day and I’ll see you soon!

xo,

Jenna
