Beyond Bluesky: These are the apps building social experiences on the AT Protocol

A year ago, Bluesky opened to the audience and was known as one of the many competitors x who appeared after Elon Musk acquired the network previously known as Twitter. Today, the Bluesky social network has grown to more than 33 million users, while the technology built on it – AT Protocol (or ATPROTO for a short period) – to develop dozens of applications designed to work together as part of an open social network.

The developers behind many of these applications attended the first conference for the protocol, atmosphere, which was held in Seattle at the end of last week. There, they have learned what awaits us in ATPROTO, what challenges still need to overcome, and what other things you will need to think about while building this new environmental system of social application. Others attended online, watched talks and presentations remotely, and participated in an increasing chat for community members.

ATPROTO community works to rebuild WEB 2.0, a previous version of the social web that included social media, blogs, wiki, video and photos sharing sites, and other cooperative and hosting services. Except this time, applications are built on open technology, not in central services that tend to be operated by technology giants.

Bluesky was the first of these services to appear, but if the open social web movement had any survival force, it will not be the last.

Below is a list of protocol -based protocols that face the consumer, which is designed at the head of Bluesky or its primary protocol, allowing users to regain control of social network experiences and personal data. Many of these matters are still in early development, but they offer the possibility of what awaits us in this widespread ecosystem.

This is an ongoing work! Applications are still added. Feeling out? Send an email to Saahp@techcrunch.com. (Note that this list focuses on the applications facing the consumer that people can use now, not small projects or DeV tools.)

Flames is the Instagram alternative depends on the previous Seebastian Vogelsang developer, Skeets, Bluesky client. It was publicly launched at the end of February, Homes got 30,000 downloads in the first 24 hours to provide a classic experience on Instagram. Users can download up to four pictures or videos up to 3 minutes, even from one minute, thanks to the Bluesky update. The app provides films, coordinated feed from artists, custom feed, and a wallet placement where photographers can display their work.

spark

Spark (originally called Reelo) is the first video that was designed over the AT protocol, not just Bluesky. This allows the application to distinguish between a broader feature collection that will include support for long videos, filters, influences, and music library, and at the end.

Skylight Social

Designed by the founders participating in the Seattle Victoria (“Tori” Ward Harmeer, Skylight is designed on top of Bluesky, and offers features such as likes, follow -up, comments and profile pages. Users can follow the active development of the application on the participating institutional Tiktok page where the team adds more features, including video support.

Pink

Pinksky is another one of many applications that try to build an alternative to Instagram using ATPROTO. The application is designed by the developer Ramon Souza, which is available on both iOS and Android and will focus mainly on the sharing of images, as did the Instagram classic. The app offers similar features for Instagram, including user profiles, photo feeding and videos, and stories section where publications remain visible for 24 hours.

BluesCreen (Tiktok alternative)

BluesCreen, which was also built by Vogelsang, is an upcoming application that focuses on videos posted on Bluesky Social Network.

Videos for Bluesky

Bluesky videos generally built on Bluesky from “MSZPRO”, also known as Hoshida Takiyoshi, an independent Japanese developer. Like others, Bluesky videos allow you to browse videos posted on Bluesky social network by scrolling vertically in a Tiktok -like user interface with familiar buttons such as republishing and responding.

Live broadcast

Greakplace

Dreamplace is the first broadcast video service built on top of the protocol. The service, which was recently used for living at the Atmosphere Conference in Seattle, provides a familiar flow experience with high -quality videos, broadcast, clips, and downloads. All video content is also signed by creators and respects their approval preferences. It is based on the same infrastructure of the public key as a central, non -central networks.

Founded by Eli Mallon, it was initially supported by the former employer, Livepeer (other decentralized video platform), which runs an encryption wardrobe where the money is invested in other projects. He was allowed to get out of the ground. He now sees the potential for building a technology that can attract creators such as Twitch Streamers, who prefer to contact directly to fans through their application or their website instead of having to divide their revenues with the Twitch Amazon owner.

Feed builders

grazing

Graze is an emerging company that allows you to easily build, customize, implement and manage Bluesky extracts, and in the end, controlled by ads and jobs sponsored and subscriptions. The service works with Bluesky Firehose, also known as Jetstream, which includes all public publications on the social network.

Surfing

Flipboard app

The latest Flipboard applications, browsing, building your custom summits from all over the open network, including not only Blues but also Mastodon, RSS and more. This means that you can mix in news articles, blog posts, podcasts, and YouTube feeding in the custom summits that you are building in the waves, along with social publications. You can then use Surf to browse the extracts and others from society through a set of topics and interests. Surf is still in a special demo test, but the subscription list is available.

Skyfeed

Skyfeed allows you to a web dependent customer, similar to Bluesky, to create a information panel of extracts and personal files. However, most of its users come to Skyfeed because it also provides an easy way even for non -developed lawyers to build custom summaries based on menus or repeat.

Communication / social discovery

germ

GERM’s big idea is not to provide an alternative to your phone messages, such as Signal, but to build a social platform where you can discover others and communicate with others for any reason: market exchange, dating, social networks, and more. However, it would be the matter that you were controlling the data you were sharing and could stop sharing at any time.

Currently, GERM, the encrypted messenger, allows you to soften to tip, which you can download from the application store, and allows you to build and share multiple identities. In addition, you can start chatting with someone on a bacterium even if the application is not installed, thanks to its use of Apple App Sva Technology. This allows you to get a lightweight application experience on your iPhone before downloading the full application from the application store.

A bacterial was established by the writer, Stanford Tessa Brown (CEO) and former Apple Privacy Engineer Mark Xue (CTO). The team is now working on Bluesky integration that would allow users to chat safely with their Bluesky friends.

spacious

The correspondence application is similar from counterpart to analogy based on the protocol in AT, spacious in some ways to the dispute but clicks on open standards. For example, ATPROTO is used for social discovery, while Automerge is used to discover a counterpart. The application is supported by financing from Skyseed and is currently in the alpha test.

You can log in to Soffier using your Bluesky account and send another message to share chats. The messages are encrypted, but this is an experimental project and not reviewing it, so be aware. In addition, some non -encrypted descriptive data appears from you speaking but not the contents of these messages. (In other words, do not switch a sign of spacious yet.)

dazzle

Dazzle was founded by the former artificial intelligence engineer John Sabath, a website that exceeds the Bluesky data and organizes it in categories, highlighting trends across various topics. While a lot of early debate on Bluesky Toyy tends to be politically, Dazzle can help you find topics and other talks that happen.

DAZZLE allows you to give it instructions to set the site to your own interests as well. You can ask him to show you a topic but without any publications that show political discussions, for example. This means that you can use dazzling to show you local news, but not the national policy, or you can keep your experience focus only on those who spread with a positive feeling.

The idea is that you will be able to switch between these different situations, which are created using artificial intelligence technology, without actually the need to build custom summaries. Instead, you can just write what you want to see (or not to see) in a chat -like interface, then a dazzling configuration itself to provide you with posts that match the “VIBE” that you just requested.

threshold

Sill Sill Service Sill Linking allows you to keep up with what everyone talks about on alternative social media sites such as Bluesky and Mastodon in one place. The Nuzzel service is similar to the oldest starting start, which Twitter got as part of the Scroll deal in 2021, then it was combined into the Twitter app. Nuzzel, which is popular in the news, helped users track what everyone was talking about on Twitter, reading, and re -navigating that day.

Sill is also among the first adopters to use Oauth from Bluesky for the AT Protocol instead of the application passwords, which facilitates login. Once you call, you will see the most common links through your services and conversations.

Bluesky, Blueskyhunter also provides Blueskyhunter as a way to take advantage of trends on the social network.
