BNSF aims to grow carload traffic with rail service upgrades.jpeg
The BNSF railway carries more coal and coal traffic more than any other railway. Now you look forward to strengthening the relatively small car download network through a range of improved service, switching the most common customers, and more strict partnerships through its short connections.
“We know that intermodal is a large part of the future of growth. We have developed AG [agriculture] “I don’t want to lose a lot of a single cargo network,” said Tom Williams, the chief marketing official in BNSF in an interview with him.
Over the past year, BNSF has taken steps to improve the efficiency of its goods network, starting with pressure on the primary end in the humpback squares and emphasizing the departure of the train on time.
These efforts were paid as BNSF published the best terminal numbers in May. For the second quarter, Terminal DWell was 21.9 hours, which was 17 % improvement compared to the second quarter of 2024.
And-violating the direction of the industry in the long term-BNSF increased the service frequency of 225 goods. For example, you may see a three -day car loading facility for a week, locally BNSF on Spears five days a week. Meanwhile, about five days a week, at the same time, went to daily service.

“This, in total, is equivalent to about 21,000 additional annual service days a year,” Williams said. Hope is that the most common local service will lead to growth in size once the industrial economy recovered.
The short railway line, which was released last fall to improve the exchange of exchange, has reduced nearly half to half on the participating short lines. The volume of railways chosen on the short line increased around 5 % this year, compared to flat sizes on other short line contacts as well as the balance of goods in BNSF.
“The full name of the game is what we were doing in the goods network is to improve speed,” Williams said.
The combination of the most efficient stations and the most common local service for cars helps to spin faster than the original to destination and return. Car miles increased daily by 25 % compared to the past year, which flying two days from the time of crossing a car that moves 1000 miles.
What this means is that customers can move the same amount of charging using a number of cars, or suddenly put their excess cars to work on more charging. “It is a good thing for us, it’s good for customers,” Williams said. “We have reduced inventory a year on an annual basis by 20 %.”
In the midst of these operating improvements, BNSF introduced in June a new set of Mile/Last Mile Group with 13 people from business development teams for industrial products.
Their focus is to understand the needs of goods customers in BNSF. Williams said: “This is not about us to go to the customer and tell them that this is our network and … you are suitable or not.”
He explained.
Meanwhile, Line Line Select aims to tighten the commercial relationship with the highest connected railway. Participation lines include GENESEE & Wyoming’s Alabama & GULF COAST, Burlington Junction Railway, Genesee & Wyoming’s Portland & Western Railway, TNW Corporation Texas Northwestern Railroud and Red River Valley & Western, and Watco’s Timber Rock Railward.
“A third of our Carload shipments arise or ends on a short line,” said Mark Ganway, who leads the BNSF short team in BNSF. “This is an important part of our business. We needed a way to move from transaction relationships to strategic partnerships.”
Last year, BNSF dealt with 2.43 million cargo loads, a number that does not include coal or grains.
“The exchange of more than 260,000 car loads per year, has G & W and BNSF with a great partnership. The presence of two G & W – Alabama & GULF railway in the east and Portland & Western, participates in the BNSF Hortline Select program, which is a natural step in the development of our relationship.” “The BNSF program implements the strengths of both the first category and the short line to expand the scope of access to the market and push more traffic to the railway as a safer and more sustainable alternative to truck transport.”
BNSF adds the Terward Shortline sites to its Trump Premier program guide. It also expands its approved sites to include sites on short lines. The sites are the properties that serve the railway ready for development. Among them: Gateway Park site on Agr in Alabama and a site in Portland & Western 45 miles north of Portland and will confirm the movement of containers on import/export.
Williams said that the next step in BNSF goods growth efforts to improve the technology tool group that customers use to interact with railways. Traditionally, BNSF bought technology applications outside the cliff. Now you build an internal technical team that develops BNSF systems.
Williams said that customers should see the improvements that have been made over the next six to 18 months.
