American students must put their phones and read a book or embrace other activities instead, and the second lady Usha Vans urged this week because she is involved in the “opening” personal revelation about “how to know the knowledge of reading and writing in the United States.”

She chose to read as a summer initiative, she told Fox News Digital, after she was inspired by her middle child’s interest in reading from watching his older brother.

“He wanted to read, and he wanted me to teach him to read,” she said in an interview.

“It took me in a rabbit hole in an attempt to understand how one learned to read … it was really great,” she added. She and her husband, Vice President JD Vance, have three children.

At the Cherokee Academy in Canton, Georgia, on Thursday, the second lady encouraged students to put out their electronic devices and interact with a book instead. (See the video at the top of this article.)

“It is great to pick up things a little more difficult and require you to focus a little more … so at a later time you can focus on what really matters,” she said.

“I think it’s a very difficult time for many people because we all have iPhone and iPad – all these things that seek your attention,” she added.

“We all have iPhone and iPad – all these things that attract your attention away.”

Her comments came during her last event in the 2025 summer reading challenge. A school official told Fox News Digital that the Cherokee Academy is a “low -tech educational environment” that imposes strict mobile phones during the school day policy.

In May, the governor of the state, Brian Kemp, of Georgia, signed the law free of distraction in the law, prohibiting the use of phones and electronic devices-including smart watches, tablets, laptops and headphones-on school land, according to many sources.

The law, which comes into effect in July 2026, will impose penalties if students from kindergarten to the eighth grade will be imposed during the study hours – from the first bell to the classroom.

Through its actions, Georgia joined other states-which is now 20-which passed by banning a mobile phone on school day, while a number of other countries prohibited use during education and class time.

Many states recommend or ask schools and/or regions to set their specially designed policies, according to multiple reports.

“Building strength or skill”

The second lady visited three different semesters this week, watching lessons in writing and mathematics. Dozens of students were received along the way.

She told reporters that reading is a way to “confront” the time that children spend on electronic devices.

“Whether it spends time outside, whether it is attractive in the types of activities where you cannot distract your attention – you really have to adhere to building strength, skill or anything you might be.”
