Catholic Church to excommunicate priests for following WA law requiring child abuse confessions to be reported

The Catholic Church has announced that the priests will be expelled if they follow the new Washington State law and require clerics to report confessions about the abuse of children to enforce the law.

“The Catholic clerics may not violate the conclusion of confession – or they will be expelled from the church,” Abrio Seattle said in a statement. “All Catholics must know and admit that their confessions remain sacred, safe, secret and protected under the Church Law.”

“The Catholic Church agrees with the goal of protecting children and preventing child abuse,” the statement added, noting that it “is still committed to reporting sexual assault on children, and working with the survivors of the victims towards recovery and protecting all minors and weak people.”

The new law – signed by the Governor of Democrat Bob Ferguson last week – added “members of the clergy” to a list of professionals who are asked to report information related to child abuse or neglect of law enforcement, and the procedure does not provide an exception to the information provided in the recognition booth.

The bill will enter into force on July 26.

Washington is only one of the five states that do not require the clerics explicitly or implicitly reporting the abuse or neglect of suspects, according to Fox 13. Most states are exempt from the information obtained by admitting compulsory reports, but Washington is now joining a handful of states that do not provide such exemptions.
