CEOs reveal how they train their bodies and minds, from playing chess to ‘energy management’

Good morning. How do New Year’s resolutions come about? As I speak with hundreds of leaders each year, one thing that strikes me is how disciplined they are in making time to take care of themselves.

I recently asked members of the Fortune CEO Initiative to share their approach to staying fighting fit. Are there two common themes among these high performers? Almost all of them mentioned an athletic element to driving that had not been discussed in previous generations, and it is clear that there is a greater awareness of the links between mental health and job performance as well. A small sample of responses:

Amy Howe, CEO of FanDuel

My job is to focus on the things only a CEO can do, like setting direction, making the toughest decisions, and intentionally devoting time and attention. This means being disciplined with my schedule and making space for reflection.

Milan Shetty, CEO of Rocket Software

Chess helps me stay sharp and reminds me that sustained success comes from goal-directed moves, not quick wins. For me, this translates to updating with intention and staying committed to a growth mindset by constantly learning, taking on new challenges, and surrounding myself with people who elevate my thinking. I treat driving like a high-performance sport.

Tony Bates, Chairman and CEO of Genesis

I prioritize recovery and clarity with equal intensity; Both are essential when the pace never slows down. The task moves quickly, but full presence—physically, mentally, and emotionally—is what allows you to maintain performance over the long term.

Leigh Turner, CEO of Cuba

When I’m at work, I enjoy everything. When I’m with my family, they have my full attention. I’ve learned that when I’m fully focused – whether at work, with family, or with friends – I’m more productive and more energized.

Tom McInerney, CEO, Genworth Financial

I play golf and ski regularly, and have done both since childhood. They continue to shape the way I think about leadership. Golf teaches you discipline, humility and focus. You can’t rush your game, you have to adapt to the circumstances in front of you. Skiing requires preparation and decisiveness, which reinforces the importance of confidence, momentum and flexibility.

Himanshu Balsoli, CEO, Cornerstone

The CEO’s job, especially in the midst of market shifts, is an endurance sport. It is a marathon that often requires fast running. I stay at my best by prioritizing balance; Exercise on the weekends, isolate noise, and strive to get seven hours of sleep.

Roy Jacobs, CEO of Philips

I’m always moving. I play soccer and run every week, and I prioritize spending time with family and friends. This time is closed. This combination keeps me grounded, energized and able to look my best.

Nigel Vaz, CEO, Publicis Sapient
Continuous Learning — I spend a significant amount of time with clients across industries, discussing their business transformation goals because this is where you see the future unfold in real time. Finally, I focus on energy management as well as time management. Leading through a once-in-a-generation technological transformation requires stamina—intellectual, emotional, and creative.

Nelson ChaiCEO, DailyPay

On the work front, I focus on the strength of the team and the power that comes from it. On a personal level, my priorities are family, health and activity. My kids are all in the working world and live in New York, so my wife and I really value the time we get to spend with them and our close friends.
