Former Barcelona forward blasts Vinicius Jr, claiming Real Madrid star is ‘unbearable’
Former Barcelona striker Christophe Dugarry has described Vinicius Junior as “insupportable” and believes Real Madrid will sell him.
The Brazilian winger was a central figure in Sunday’s 2-1 Clásico win over Barcelona, albeit for all the wrong reasons.
He angered Madrid fans with his angry reaction after being substituted in the 72nd minute, expressing his displeasure – including saying “I’m leaving this team” – in a very public display of anger towards coach Xabi Alonso before storming down the tunnel.
When he returned, he was involved in the post-match brawl which saw several Real Madrid players target Lamin Yamal, who had made inflammatory statements before the match about the capital club.
Dujarry – Vinicius Junior did not respect his coach
Dugarry expressed his enthusiasm for the performance of his French compatriot Kylian Mbappe, who opened the scoring and posed a constant threat to Barcelona’s defense, but he had nothing but criticism for Vinicius Junior.
He said: “I liked Mbappe’s game, both in his attitude and his behavior. Unlike Vinicius, who is insufferable. He always complains about the referee and his competitors. Now, he does not respect his coach.”
Vinicius Junior has struggled to replicate his best form over the past 12 months – since losing out to Manchester City midfielder Rodri in voting for the 2024 Ballon d’Or.
“You may be disappointed,” added Dujarry, who made seven appearances for Barcelona in the 1997-98 season and played 55 international matches for France. [to be taken off]But this goes too far. Go away man, your performance is not up to par.
“He annoys me, he cries nonstop, he’s always asking for something. He’s still very far from his level of recent seasons. He was the future Ballon d’Or, Brazil’s captain, one of Real Madrid’s best players. He needs to prove something more if he wants to return to the same level.
“[Real Madrid president] Florentino Perez will get rid of him.”
Cross defends Vinny under fire
However, Vinicius Junior received words of support from one of his former team-mates.
Toni Kroos, who retired last year after a brilliant career at the Bernabeu, said: “When you play an exceptional match, especially in a match like this, to say the least you are not happy.” [at being substituted]. I never liked being substituted either, although, to be fair, I never went into the dressing room straight after coming off the field.
“It’s easy to judge from the outside. I would like to keep in mind that those who are there in El Clásico, in front of 80,000 spectators with the score 2-1, want everything but to get out. No one can judge or imagine those feelings.”
Alonso confirmed after the match that he would discuss Vinicius’ reaction with the player, but Kroos believes the coach will have a lot of understanding.
“The anger could have lasted a little longer,” the former Germany international midfielder added.
“I understand his anger, but as you can see in the pictures, it is not conveyed in the ideal way. However, I want to point out that it is an emotionally exceptional situation to be there in such a match. I have lived it many times, so you don’t always have to take everything seriously. Coaches don’t usually do that either. Especially those who were players.”
