NATO Secretary -General Mark Roti said on Sunday that President Donald Trump will use the next summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin to test the seriousness of Putin to end the war with Ukraine.

“This week” told ABC that the meeting comes at a time when Trump continues to pressure Putin, pointing to the recent secondary sanctions on countries such as India, which bought Russian oil and providing deadly weapons to Ukraine.

“Next Friday will be important because it will be about Putin’s test, and the extent of his seriousness in causing this terrible war,” Root said.

Trump announced the first personal meeting with Putin since Moscow launched its deadly invasion of Ukraine in 2022 in a social publication on Saturday. The leaders in Alaska are expected to meet on Friday, August 15.

In recent weeks, Trump has refused to extinguish the words when asked about Putin. Trump said during the cabinet meeting on July 8 that he was tired of Putin and said he was looking forward to imposing new sanctions on Russia.

The NATO president described the upcoming meeting “an important step” in the process of reaching peace negotiations on a large scale between Russia and Ukraine.

However, Ukrainian President Voludeimir Zellinski was not expected to be at the top with Trump and Putin as of Sunday. Despite the absence of Zelinski, Root said, “We need Ukraine on the table,” Root.

“The matter will be related to the region,” said Root. “Of course, it will be about security guarantees, but also about the absolute need to admit that Ukraine decides in its future, that Ukraine is a sovereign nation that has been decided on its geopolitical future, of course there are no restrictions on the levels of its military forces, and for NATO allies because there are no restrictions on our presence in the eastern center in countries such as Latvia, and Estia.”

When asked if Putin could be trusted, Whitaker said that in any case of competing national interests, procedures will be, not words, decide whether peace is achieved and preserved.

“The words are cheap, but in this case, whether the Russians or the Ukrainians, both sides will have to take measures to obtain peace and continue to honor this peace,” he said.
