For fans with long memories, this trailer is full of tributes to the original games and interwoven He-Man lore. The witch is hiding in plain sight

At the beginning of the show we see a colorful bird flying over the fantasy world of Eternia. She reappears later, still hovering over everything and everyone. Given how much of this trailer focuses on swords and sorcery, you might be wondering why this bird (and not even, say, a robot bird) is so prominently featured.

The answer is that it’s not just a bird: it’s the witch, who (at least in the original) Masters of the universe Animation) is the mysterious guardian of Castle Grayskull and can transform herself into a falcon at will. She is a major part of the franchise’s early lore, and in previous cartoons, was Teyla’s secret mother. When she’s not in bird form, Morena Baccarin plays the witch, who (having starred in both) dead pool and Gotham) is no stranger to telling colorful stories.

A common origin story

The future king repelled the attack, and the acid horribly disfigured Keldur, turning him into an evil skeleton man.

Presumably, that’s why they cast Jared Leto as this villain: to show him as the handsome Keldur before he turns into a ghoul monster. My theory is that he leads the attack in the trailer that causes Marlena to banish Adam to Earth and that he (like in the cartoon) will be disfigured during the attack. In this way, the film will tie the origins of He-Man and Skeletor together in a way the series has never done before.

The big deal about Big Jim

One fun detail we learn about He-Man’s time on Earth is that he became a true geek who focused heavily on swords and sorcery. Presumably, that’s why he ends up in a maniacal toy store, pulling out a sword carried by a barbarian statue. While this statue is a cool Easter egg in its own right (more on that in a minute), there’s something innocuous lurking in the background: a Big Game toy box.

Big Jim is important to He-Man history because Mattel eventually reworked some of the old toy designs for their Masters of the Universe figures. The most famous example of this is that Battle Cat (He-Man’s loyal green tiger) was originally created from the mold of Big Jim’s tiger. He is a man meeting his own game

A very special release date

The film is scheduled to premiere on June 5, which sounds perfect for a nostalgic summer movie. Therefore, ordinary fans had no real reason to believe that this date had any special significance.

However, June 5 also happens to be the birthday of Mark Taylor, the aforementioned designer who created the famous He-Man look. Taylor had no way of knowing it at the time, but his brilliant design ended up changing the landscape of pop culture and gaming history. He sadly passed away in 2021, but the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie will be released on his 85th birthday, helping to honor the legacy of He-Man’s most important creator.
