Experts split as Trump halts Yemen bombing campaign after Houthi ceasefire deal

president Donald Trump suddenly stopped the US air strikes against Houthi militants in Yemen to praise as a possible penetration – and doubts whether it will continue.

On Tuesday, Trump in the Oval Office was the official party to the “Rough Rider”, a 50 -day bombing campaign targeting more than 1,000 locations across Yemen.

“The Houthis have announced that they do not want to fight anymore,” Trump said during the White House comments. “They say they will not detonate ships anymore. This is the purpose of what we were doing. So … we will stop the bombings.”

Bard Al -Busidi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amman, who participated in the peace negotiations, confirmed that the talks led to a ceasefire. “In the future, none of the other parties, including American ships, will target the Red Sea Strait and Bab Al -Manand, ensuring freedom of movement and smooth flow of international commercial charging.”

While Trump portrayed the ceasefire as a direct military victory, experts say that the road to this moment was built on a deliberate diplomatic escalation-that is, the threat of two-bodies against both the Houthis and their Iranian supporters.

“This was related to linking the Houthi aggression directly to Iran,” said Kasaboglu, a older colleague at the Hudson Institute. “The Trump administration clearly indicated: Any other attacks will bring consequences to Tehran as well. This was the actual success of success.”

The origin of the campaign came in March after an increase in the Houthi attacks on international shipping and dramatic escalation at the end of last week, when a missile landed from the Israeli Ben Gurion Airport. This prompted an Israeli reprisal raid at the main Yemen airport in Sanana, which military officials say is broken.

The Lieutenant Colonel Eric Navarro, Director of the Red Sea Security Initiative at the Middle East Forum, launched a ceasefire on a “overwhelming pressure product”, pointing to the accurate American strikes in the leadership infrastructure and control of the Houthis, which is profitable of Israeli air differences.

“They have seen writing on the wall,” Navarro said. “I would like to claim that this is the type of pressure that must be applied over time – not only to the Houthis, but also for the Iranian regime.”

From a military point of view, the Trump campaign benefited from the important assets, including the bombers that fly from Diego Garcia and two American planes operating in the region. The width of power, along with clear diplomatic signals, appears to have motivated the ceasefire – at least at the present time.

However, not all analysts see that the Houthis are a serious threat or the campaign as a necessary use of strength.

“Trump’s sudden declaration that the United States will stop air strikes against the Houthis is the right decision, regardless of whether the group stops targeting American ships,” said Rosemary Kielnik, director of the Middle East program in the defense priorities. “The Houthis threatening has always been more noise than the material.”

Keelnik has argued that the group’s attacks on shipping “did not harm the American economy nor contribute to inflation, which has already decreased during the attacks of the militant group throughout the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.” From its point of view, “The largest achievement of the Houthis was deceiving the United States to waste about $ 7 billion of its own resources by bombing them.”

“Trump’s bold choice shows that there is a screaming from an endless escalation in the Middle East.”

“The open strikes were unauthorized in Washington and were not authorized against the Houthis to target shipping in the Red Sea, an example of strategic misbehavior, as they neglected the origins of the conflict (the war in Gaza) and the failure to obtain a set of projects in advertising,” said John Hoffman, a colleague of defense and foreign policy research at the Kato Institute.

Military analysts are still skeptical of the Houthi reliability in the long run.

“I am always worried about groups like the Houthis who adhere to anything they say,” Navarro said, warning that the ceasefire may be a temporary stop to rebuild their capabilities. “We need to remain vigilant … and adopt a broader strategy that not only includes military tools, but also economic and teachers, and support local alternatives to control the Houthis in Yemen.”

However, the Trump administration depends as a strategic victory that explains how military force can, when it is practiced with diplomatic clarity, can result from tangible political results.

“The tremendous victory, President Trump promised to restore freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, and he used a great American force to quickly deliver this promise. The world is safer with President Trump responsible,” said Caroline Levitt, a White House press secretary.

“If they can offer this, that will be a great victory and the Trump administration,” Kaspghlu said.

Whether it is the ceasefire – or proves that it is just a calm in a longer conflict – it still must be seen. But at the present time, the bombs stopped, and Washington was calling for victory.
