Two girls were injured and taken to the hospital after being thrown from the Ferris wheel at the Louisiana Harvest Festival.

According to ABC News, the incident occurred around noon on Saturday, November 1, at the Louisiana Harvest Festival. According to the festival’s official website, the Gathering and Carnival Parade is an annual event “dedicated to supporting the local agriculture-based community.” According to the outlet, during the event, two young girls, both under the age of 13, were riding the Ferris wheel. That’s when they were “kicked out” of their cabin.

“The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office is actively investigating an incident in which two riders fell from a Ferris wheel ride at the New Roads Harvest Festival on Saturday,” the Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office confirmed.

One witness told the outlet that it appeared the booth the girls were riding in “turned upside down and threw the girls outside.”

“It stuck to the wires, then it flipped over, and both girls fell. I heard a sound like a body falling, just like something falling. And I heard a loud bang,” Madison Fields explained. “They were two girls, and one of the girls fell on her face, and she was very hurt.”

Pointe Coupée Parish Mayor Rene Thibodeau reportedly suggested that “a mechanical failure in the part that holds children in their seats may be the cause,” according to NBC News.

Per ABC News, Parish Sheriff Thibodeau confirmed that both girls were taken to hospitals. In addition, the sheriff reportedly indicated that one of the girls had to be airlifted to a medical facility.

“Our thoughts are with the families and our prayers are,” Al-Sharif added to ABC News.

According to CBS News, one of the girls suffered broken bones while the other “may have had a bleed on her brain.” Furthermore, the outlet adds that the fall was at least 20 feet. Finally, the outlet confirmed that circulating footage shows a third girl hanging from the booth following the pair’s initial fall. The third girl reportedly did not suffer any injuries.
