Gov. Hochul endorses Zohran Mamdani for NYC mayor after nearly 3-month wait

It took nearly three months, but the largest democracy in New York State has finally supported the Democratic City mayor Zahran Mamdani.

“New York City deserves a mayor who will stand in front of Donald Trump and make life more affordable for New York residents. This is Zohrankmamdani,” said New York Governor Cathy Hochol on Sunday evening on a social media site.

The ruler’s support is important, because it may help Mamdani to secure the support of other major members in establishing the party. It is likely to increase the pressure on the other major Democrats in New York State who are still withholding their support for Mamdani – the leader of the Senate minority Chuck Schumer and the leader of the minority in the House of Representatives, Hakim Jeffrez, the best two Democratic Party leaders in the congress.

“It is grateful to the ruler to support it in uniting our party – as well as the work she did to stand up to President Trump, secure free lunch for our children, and expand access to childcare,” Mamdani said in a statement.

Hotchol announced her support for Mamdani, the 33 -year -old socialist legislator from Queens who shocked the political world in June by defeating former state governor Andrew Como and nine other candidates to seize the Democratic Party nomination, in the New York Times.

“In the past few months, there were explicit talks with him. We had differences,” the ruler wrote. “But in our talks, I heard a leader who participates in the commitment towards New York where children can grow safely in their neighborhoods and where the opportunity is within the reach of every family. I heard a leader focusing on making New York City to cost – a goal I support enthusiastically.”

Mamdani, the Ugandan birth, if elected, will become the first Muslim mayor and the first millennium in the country’s most populated city. He is a clear candidate in the latest public opinion polls in the municipal race in the city dominated by Democrats.

Mamdani sits on the sidelines of 22 points on Komo and the rest of the stadium in the polls that were released last week from the University of Quinobak and the New York Times/Siena. A survey from Emerson and The Hill also refers to Mamdani comfortably in double numbers.

Mamdani went up to the Democratic Elementary Victory thanks to an active campaign that focuses heavily on the ability to withstand costs and the high cost of living in New York City. He was driven by an army of supporters at the base and support level Deputy Alexandria Okasio Cortez From New York and Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont.

Mamdani used smart media platforms, including Tiktok, where he shared voters in the low density. He suggested getting rid of prices to ride the vast bus system in New York City, making Cuny (New York City University) “free of tuition fees”, freezing rents on municipal housing, providing “free children’s care” for children up to 5 years old and the construction of government -run groceries.

Mamdani was severely criticized by his competitors for his previous comments in the New York City Police Department (NYPD), and his suggestion by changing some responsibilities away from the New York Police and focusing on social services and community program.

Hoachol said that in her talks with Mamdani, she explained, “It is very clear that our police officers should have every resource to maintain the safety of our streets and the subway. He urged him to make sure there is a strong leadership at the head of NYPD – and he agreed.”

The ruler also addressed Mamdani’s previous monetary comments on Israel.

“We discussed the need to combat the rise of anti -Semitism urgently and unambiguously. I was pleased to see him meet with Jewish leaders throughout the city, listen and address their fears directly,” said Hochol.

Hochul Mamdani may also be supported, but the ruler can also help support support from the Progressive Democrats base because it seeks to re -election next year.

Mamdani Hochol praised her focus on treating the ability to withstand costs.

“I look forward to the fighting alongside her to continue her record of returning money in the pockets of New York residents and building New York City more secure and stronger as no one is forced to leave so that they can raise a family,” he said.

But Republican Elise Stefanick from New York, Trump’s highest ally, who is expected later this year to launch a 2026 race for the ruler, and aim at Hoachol.

“The moment the New York residents are looking for a strong leadership from their ruler with a majority opposing Zahran Mamdani, Cathy Hochol adopts this massive Communist who will destroy New York, making it less affordable and more dangerous prices – once again the launch of criminals and Communists first, and the New York residents finally,” Stefanick argued in a statement.
