Here’s how we picked this year’s Innovators Under 35

Massachusetts Institute Technology Review Technology For the first time, the list of creators under the age of 35 in 1999 was published. It is a great tradition for us, and we often follow the work of various distinguished creators for years, and even decades, after they appear on the list. So before the big announcement, I want to stop a moment to explain how we choose the people we get to know each year.
Step 1: An invitation to nominations
Our process begins with an invitation to nominations, which usually run out in the last months of the previous year and is open to anyone, anywhere in the world. We encourage people to nominate themselves, which takes only a few minutes. This method helps us discover people who do an important job that we may not face.
This year we had 420 nominations. Two -thirds of our candidates have been put up by another person and a third of themselves. We received nominations for people in about 40 countries. Nearly 70 % was based in the United States, with the United Kingdom, Switzerland, China and the United Arab Emirates, respectively, and were the highest concentrations.
After closing the nominations, a few editors spend several weeks review the candidates and choose the semi -finals. During this stage, we are looking for people who have developed practical solutions to societal issues or have provided important scientific developments that can be translated into new technologies. Their work should have the ability to influence – it cannot be specialized or gradual. What is unique in their approach should be clear.
Step 2: Semi -final round applications
This year, we outperformed our initial list of hundreds of candidates to 108 of the semi -finals. Then we asked these expatriates to obtain more information to help us know them better and evaluate their work.
We ask three reference messages and biography of each semi -final, and we all ask them to answer some short questions about their work. We also give them the option to share a video clip or pass the relevant magazines articles or other links to help us learn more about what they are doing.
Step 3: Expert judges are weighing
After that, we bring dozens of experts to examine the semi -finals. This year, 38 judges evaluated and recorded requests. We match the competitors with judges who work in similar fields whenever possible. At least two reviews each participant, although most of them look at him by three.
