Roy Jones Jr brands one active heavyweight ‘the modern day George Foreman’

How does a fighter beat Roy Jones Jr? Using the same exit song he used before definitely helps.

Released in 2004, “Can’t Be Touched” was first performed by himself, and its lyrics reflect the superiority Jones had over his opponents throughout the 1990s.

However, the track arrived in the same year that Jones lost his light heavyweight titles to Antonio Tarver, a defeat that marked the beginning of the end for one of boxing’s all-time greats.

Jones’ ring lane anthem has enjoyed a recent revival thanks to British heavyweight Fabio Wardley, who is using the song as a tribute to Jones. The lyric “Unstoppable” is particularly apt. The 31-year-old remains unbeaten after 21 professional bouts, and now holds the WBO heavyweight title.

Jones was full of praise for Wardley and his October victory over Joseph Parker during an appearance on the Clubhouse Boxing podcast.

“What a performance. What a career. What a dynamic guy. And I love it even more because he always comes to my songs. How can you not cheer for this guy?”

Wardley’s previous tournaments against Justis Honey were Hollywood-esque, but the test against Parker represents a huge step forward in the class.

The New Zealander has been enjoying a strong spell of fitness and was widely viewed as the last credible challenger to heavyweight kingpin Oleksandr Usyk. However, once again, Wardley tore up the script, digging deep to secure a stoppage of the former WBO champion in the 11th round.

Jones admitted that he had doubts about whether Wardley had the tools to pull off such a massive victory. However, the Ipswich heavyweights’ raw power and relentless aggression left such an impression that Jones found himself searching for comparisons with one of the division’s all-time greats.

“I’ve been a fan of Joseph Parker because I’ve known Joseph Parker for a long time.

“When you listen to my song, how can I be against this guy? I can’t. I didn’t think he had the ability to beat Parker, but I knew if he could catch him, he could knock him out, and sure enough, he got the better of him and caught him.”

“This guy is something different and fun to watch because he’s always able to deliver that knockout punch. To me, he’s a modern-day George Foreman.”

It’s certainly high praise from Jones, as Foreman is viewed as one of the best heavyweights of all time. He has captured world honors on two occasions in his career, and the second of those victories saw “Big George” become the oldest world heavyweight champion of all time.
