Rangers latest: Kevin Muscat move collapses with Danny Rohl back in contention | Football News
Danny Ruhl is among those who are back in the running for the position of Rangers coach after talks with Kevin Muscat collapsed. Sky Sports News Understands.
Ruhl withdrew from the process after learning that others were ahead of him in the race to succeed Russell Martin.
However, with Muscat and Steven Gerrard out of the running, the former Sheffield Wednesday boss could land the head coaching job.
Ibrox sources insist the club have spoken to several candidates in recent days, despite advanced talks being held with Muscat.
It is believed a date could be set in the coming days, with Rangers on Thursday taking on Brann in the Europa League – a competition in which they are winless this season.
Ruhl, 36, was also made aware of the job in the summer and impressed officials at Ibrox during his talks.
He guided Sheffield Wednesday to a 12th-placed finish in the Sky Bet Championship in his only full season as manager before leaving the troubled Yorkshire club in July.
Previously an assistant manager at RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and with the German national team, he had rescued Wednesday from relegation trouble the previous season.
Collapse of the Muscat deal
Talks had reached an advanced stage with Muscat, who is currently in charge of Shanghai Port, and was expected to succeed Russell Martin following his career in the Chinese Super League.
However, the timeframe for the deal is believed to have proven problematic. While Shanghai Port’s last match in the league will be on November 22, Sky Sports News We were told that the start date could have been pushed back until December.
Shanghai Port currently sits in second place, two points clear at the top of the Chinese Super League, two points behind its nearest rivals.
Last weekend, former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard pulled out of the process, with timing understood to be an issue.
In the days that followed, former Sheffield Wednesday boss Ruhl walked away from the process as talks with Muscat progressed.
Thelwell and Stewart’s talks did not lead to the collapse of the Muscat deal
Ibrox chairman Andrew Cavenagh – who led the US takeover of the club in the summer – and deputy chairman Parag Marathe have been leading the search and speaking to various candidates.
They were joined by 49ers Enterprises technical director Grettar Stenson, Gers CEO Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell in London for the negotiations.
Reports earlier on Sunday suggested the move had collapsed following talks between Muscat, Stewart and Thelwell. However, these claims have been dismissed by Ibrox sources.
Rangers insist they are continuing talks with various candidates and hope to appoint Martin’s successor in the coming days.
What’s next for Rangers and who will be in charge?
Martin was sacked on 5 October after a 123-day spell at Ibrox.
Under-19s coach Steven Smith – who had two spells at Ibrox as a player – was caretaker in charge of Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Dundee United.
Before the match, Smith said he was “determined” to keep fans happy amid a period of turmoil.
Rangers return to action on Thursday away to Brann in the Europa League, a competition in which they are winless this season.
“embarrassed!” What Boyd had to say about Rangers’ managerial recruitment
News of Muscat’s proposed move to become Rangers manager comes hours after Chris Boyd criticized the Rangers board over the process of appointing a replacement for Martin.
“Something is broken within the football club right now,” Boyd said. Sky Sports.
“The fans are fed up, it has been a long time since Rangers have been a successful football club.
“There is an expectation to go and win trophies. But above all you have to win games to do that. There are a lot of problems that lie deeper than the manager. Russell Martin has been removed from his duties, you see the same things happening again.
“There is no cooperation from the stands to the hierarchy. They feel as if the clubs are going in one direction. The fans are investing their money.
“It’s not like Russell Martin was really doing well. Two weeks ago he was sacked. The five or six weeks before that were just as bad.
“This succession plan certainly has someone in place or you’re already talking to someone. The protracted process over the last two weeks has been embarrassing for the football club.”
“The meeting with Steven Gerrard took place in London. Why didn’t someone jump on the plane to Bahrain and meet Steven Gerrard before the time actually arrived?” I don’t agree with the timing. Nothing changes in five or six hours.
“Steven Gerrard listened to what was happening and said: ‘Enough, I don’t want to be involved in that.’
“There was something he didn’t like in the background that made him say, ‘I don’t want that.'”
“Then suddenly it was down to Danny Ruhl. Then there was anger from fans on social media. They made it clear they didn’t want Danny Ruhl anywhere near the club.
“Then suddenly we became Muscat. I know this board has not been in charge for a long period of time but this man has been overlooked in the last three management appointments.”
