IBM releases a new mainframe built for the age of AI

IBM releases the latest version of its central devices that include new updates aimed at speeding up the adoption of artificial intelligence.
On Monday, IBM Z17 announced the latest version of the central computers. The company says that this fully encrypted microscope is supported by the IBM Telum II processor and is designed for more than 250 cases of Amnesty International, including artificial intelligence agents and AI.
Mainframes may look like an old hat, but it is used by 71 % of Fortune 500 companies today, according to one source. In 2024, the value of the Mainframe market was estimated at about $ 5.3 billion, for each future of a consulting company market.
Z17 can process 450 billion conclusions in one day, an increase of 50 % over its predecessor, IBM Z16, which was released in 2022 and operated on the company’s original Tellum processor. The system is designed to be able to fully integrate with devices, other programs and open source tools.
Tina Tarquinio, Vice president for Product Management and Design to IBM Z and Techcrunch that this central framework was working for five years – a long time before the current artificial intelligence madness that started with the Openai’s Chatgpt in November 2022.
Teruro said that IBM spent more than 2000 research hours obtaining notes from more than 100 customers because it built Z17. She believes that it is interesting to see that, after five years after five years, the comments they received are in line with the place where the market ended.
“It was known to know the Amnesty International accelerator, then we see, especially in the last half of 2022, all the changes in the industry regarding AI,” Tarkinho told Techcrunch. “It was really exciting. I think the largest point was [that] We do not know what we do not know about what will happen, right? So the possibilities are really unlimited regarding what artificial intelligence can help us. “
Tarquinio said the Z17 was prepared for adaptation and the heads of the artificial intelligence market. Mainframe 48 faster chips will support IBM Spyre AI at the release, with a plan to raise this number to 96 within 12 months.
“We intentionally build in the head room,” said Tarkinho. “We intentionally build in light movement of artificial intelligence. So new models are presented, [we’re] Ensure that we have built the head room for larger and larger models – you may need more local memory to talk to each other. We have built this because we know that it is really the approach that will change, right? The new models will come and go. “
Tarquinio said that one of the most prominent events in these last devices-although it was jokingly as if she was required to choose her favorite child-is that Z17 is more efficient in energy than her predecessor and supposed competitors as well.
“On the chip, we increase the acceleration of artificial intelligence seven and a half times, but this is five and a half times less energy than you will need to do, such as, the multi -model model on another type of acceleration or platform in the industry,” said Tarkinho.
Mainframes Z17 will be generally available on June 8.
