“If You’re Ready For Usyk, Prove It”
2020 Olympic silver medalist Richard Torrez Jr. says he wants to fight Moses Itauma next. He stated that he is “willing and able” to fight Itauma (13-0, 11 KO) to give him the opportunity to prove he is ready to challenge Oleksandr Usyk for the heavyweight belts.
Would Queensberry risk it?
The 26-year-old Torrez Jr. (13-0, 11 KOs) would be a huge step up in class for the 20-year-old Itauma from the lower-level opposition his promoters in Queensberry were competing with.
It’s doubtful that Itauma’s British promoters would risk it against a live body like Torrez Jr., because He does not fit the category of fighters They were matching Moses against him. He’s not in his 40s and he’s not on the downside of his career. Itauma has faced a certain type of heavyweight since turning pro. Torrez Jr. doesn’t fit the mold.
As an amateur, Moses never fought the upper echelon of Cuba, Eastern Europe, or the United States. Itauma quickly turned professional before facing any of the world’s most talented amateurs who would show what he was all about.
Although they made a big deal about matching Itauma against Dillian Whyte in their last bout on August 16, 2025, it was yet another example of a gimme-level opponent being fed to the highly-hyped Itauma to ensure he remained undefeated long enough to fight Usyk.
Torrez’s resume speaks louder
Torrez Jr. is ranked No. 4 in the International Boxing Federation (IBF), No. 11 in the World Boxing Championship (WBC) and No. 11 in the World Boxing Organization (WBO). Based on his resume, he should be ranked higher than Moses Itauma.
Torrez’s last win was via unanimous decision in 10 rounds at the 2016 Olympian Guido Vianello Better than any wins on Itauma’s resume. The 37-year-old White, who was ousted by Itauma last August, is not on the same level as Vianello.
White has already been knocked out in recent years by Tyson Fury in six rounds on April 23, 2022, and Alexander Povetkin in five rounds on August 22, 2020.
“If he’s ready for Usyk, fight me.”
“I want that fight. I want the Itauma fight. I think it’s going to be a great fight,” Richard Torrez Jr. told Sean Zettel on
Torrez Jr.’s force and pressure style will be a nightmare for Moses Itauma to deal with. This will be the first fight in which he fights someone who can fight back since his bout with Stylianos Roulias in the amateurs in 2022.
Itauma was on his bike throughout the three-match match against Roulias, trying to escape his pressure. It was not very impressive from Musa, showing the flaw in his game. He doesn’t handle relentless pressure well, which is the kind of style Torrez Jr. brings, but with more intensity.
“I understand he wants those belts, but we’re both young heavyweights. We’re both energetic, we’re both willing and able,” Torrez Jr. said of his interest in fighting Moses Itauma.
Itauma anti-aging list
Ideally, Queensberry should accept Richard Torrez Jr.’s offer to fight Itauma, because it would be a great fight, and it would show the fans that he’s not the fake hype job that many of them think he is. They see Itauma being matched up against these older fighters, and are able to connect the dots to see what his career is really about:
- Dillian Whyte – 37
- Mike Balogun – 41
- Dan Garber – 40
- Marius Wash – 45
“I don’t think he’s going to run away from this fight. I’m not going to run away from this fight. I love this fight. Let’s get some excitement together. I know the UK fans are great fans of the fight. And the US will certainly back me as well. I’m saying it’s a great fight I want to make it happen,” Torrez Jr. said.
