Inter and Marseille go top after capitalising on rivals slip-ups

Italian League A

Inter Milan rose to the top of the Italian League on goal difference after defeating Roma 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico.

Ange-Yoann Bony scored in the sixth minute and it proved to be enough for last season’s Champions League finalists to retain all three points and displace Napoli at the top of the table.

Inter had the opportunity after Napoli’s shock 1-0 loss to Torino earlier in the day.

Giovanni Simeone โ€“ son of Atletico Madrid coach Diego โ€“ scored the only goal of the game shortly after the half-hour mark to condemn the champions to their second league defeat of the season.

In other matches in the Italian League, they tied without goals in Lecceโ€™s match with Sassuolo and Pisaโ€™s match with Verona.

French League 1

In Ligue 1, Marseille took full advantage of Paris Saint-Germain’s 3-3 loss to Strasbourg on Friday to move one point clear at the top of Ligue 1.

Mason Greenwood scored four goals as Roberto De Zerbe’s side beat Le Havre 6-2 in an exciting encounter on Saturday evening.

Yassin Kashta put Laharv ahead in the 24th minute, but defender Gautier Lloris – brother of former Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo – received a direct red card for handball inside the area 10 minutes later.

It proved expensive. Greenwood converted the penalty before adding three more goals in the second half.

Robinho Vaz then scored Marseille’s fifth goal with just minutes remaining before Abdoulaye Toure scored a consolation goal in stoppage time.

But that was not the final action as Michael Murillo scored Marseille’s sixth goal in the final seconds.

Lyon wasted its chance to advance over the defending champion after losing 3-2 to Nice.

Pavel Sulke scored two goals for Lyon, but it was not enough, as goals from Melvin Bard, Sofiane Diop and Hicham Boudaoui ensured that the hosts got the three points.

In the other match, Monaco tied with Angers 1-1. Folarin Balogun scored for Monaco before Siddiq Sherif equalized for the hosts five minutes before the end.

Spanish League

With Barcelona displacing Real Madrid at the top of La Liga for at least 24 hours, Atletico Madrid also moved ahead of their city rivals with a 1-0 win over Osasuna.

Thiago Almada’s 69th-minute goal proved to be the difference as Simeone’s side moved up to fourth place.

Meanwhile, Villarreal and Real Betis โ€“ the two teams eyeing a top-four finish โ€“ were held to a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Estadio de la Ceramica.

The Yellow Submarine took a two-goal lead thanks to Tajon Buchanan and Alberto Molero, but Anthony – a rejuvenated figure since his departure from Manchester United – scored twice, including a 94th-minute equaliser.

The result kept Villarreal in third place, but meant Betis dropped to fifth place thanks to Atletico’s victory.

In other matches in Spain, Mallorca achieved a wonderful victory over Sevilla with a score of 3-1.

Ruben Vargas opened the scoring for Sevilla but a brave display from Mallorca in the second half resulted in two goals from Vedat Muriqi and an unanswered brace from Mateo Joseph to secure an important win for the La Liga strugglers.

German League

In the Bundesliga, apart from leaders Bayern achieving a record-equalling 11th successive win in all competitions, wins for RB Leipzig and Stuttgart saw them leapfrog Dortmund in the table.

Leipzig moved into second place after beating Hamburg FC 2-1 thanks to goals from Christoph Baumgartner in both halves to leave Uli Werner’s side unbeaten in six matches.

Former Arsenal player Albert Sambe Lukunga scored a goal for Hamburg.

Meanwhile, Stuttgart were far more comfortable in their encounter with Wolfsburg, recording a convincing 3-0 win at the Volkswagen Arena.

Thiago Thomas, Max Mittelstadt and Angelo Stiller scored the goals for the visitors, who moved to third place.

There was also a win for Leverkusen, who emerged victorious in a seven-goal thriller against Mainz.

Coach Kasper Hjulmand’s men took the lead with two goals through Alejandro Grimaldo from a penalty kick and a goal from Christian Covanni, but Lee Jae-sung reduced the gap after 10 minutes.

Grimaldo doubled his tally in stoppage time of the first half, before Mainz responded again thanks to a penalty kick scored by Nadim Amiri in the 71st minute.

Martin Terrier then added a late fourth for Leverkusen, but once again Mainz reduced the deficit to one goal with an Armendo Sepp goal in the 90th minute to create tension in the last few minutes.

In the other two matches, Cologne and Augsburg tied 1-1, while Heidenheim and Werder tied 2-2.
