Vice president J.D. Vance on Sunday shared what he called a “crazy” account highlighting the dangers federal immigration officers face in Minneapolis, amid a series of agent-involved shootings and escalating unrest.
Recounting a recent visit to the city, Vance described an incident in which off-duty Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers were questioned while eating at a restaurant.
According to Vance, their location was publicly revealed, the restaurant was swarmed, and officers were surrounded inside.
“When I was in Minneapolis, I heard a number of crazy stories. But near the top of the list: There were two off-duty ICE officers who were going to dinner in Minneapolis. Their location was exposed, and then people were packed into the restaurant. The officers were locked in the restaurant,” Vance wrote on X.

Local police refused to respond when officers called for help, Vance said.
“The officers were detained at the restaurant, and local police refused to respond to their requests for assistance (based on directions from local authorities),” he wrote. “Eventually, their fellow federal agents came to their aid.”

“This is just a glimpse of what is happening in Minneapolis as state and local officials refuse to cooperate with immigration enforcement,” Vance wrote. “They created chaos so they could have moments like yesterday, where someone tragically dies and politicians talk about the evils of policing the border.”
Vance urged Minneapolis officials to change course.
“The solution is to stare everyone in the face. I hope the authorities in Minneapolis stop this madness.”
A day earlier, Vance described the unrest in Minnesota as “orchestrated chaos” in the wake of another fatal shooting by a federal agent.
