Lawmaker looks to ban Chinese-owned GNC from military bases

While a lot of congress focuses on China’s ban on the purchase of lands near the American military bases, the novice MP Pat Harigan, RN.C, says that the Chinese Communist Party has already has a direct presence in those facilities – through the GNC National Nutrition Series.

A draft law issued by Hargan this week, the 2025 Military Retail Security Law, will prevent any companies from Chinese, North Korean, Iranian or Russian from working on military bases.

In June 2020, GNC has advanced vitamin division to bankruptcy and was fully obtained by Harbin Pharmaceuticals, a partly owned by China. Harbin had previously obtained a 40 % stake in GNC in 2018.

In 2019, GNC agreed to integrate its manufacture with international Vitamin Corporation (IVC), which has a federation of Chinese investors.

The company, which was established in Pittsburg, was already working on the US bases for years at the time of its sale, and has been overlooked by its ability to help in Chinese monitoring on the military bases.

Now, about 85 GNC stores are working on American military bases. It works under what is known as “long -term concessions” contracts, which means that they work, employ and provide them with GNC.

“This is a really mature goal to collect intelligence,” Harigan said. “This is not a joke about defending the safety of our army, while ensuring that foreign opponents who actively seek to undermine us have no chance to do this from within our military bases.”

“You know who are these people, the customers who have their own purchase habits. You can access sensitive health information based on the type of products they buy,” he said.

Harigan said that the store could determine individuals with weaknesses by tracking frequent hormones, sleeping tools or anxiety supplements. He added that he could also monitor publishing courses based on changes in purchase patterns.

Harigan warned that the arrival of GNC can even allow litigants to provide prohibited or harmful materials – or fake products – with the deterioration of military readiness.

Harigan said that the store offers possible electronic risks, noting that the WiFi network in the store and tracking mobile data could reveal the geographical sunbathing of the forces. He warned that loyalty applications and promotional materials can be used to include harmful links or programs.

Fox News Digital communicated with GNC to comment but did not receive a response before publishing.

Legislators offered dozens of bills aimed at preventing China from buying American territory near sensitive military sites – a movement that gained urgency after the Chinese Group Fuffeng Group bought 370 acres near the Northern Air Force base in Dakota in 2022.

China has about 350,000 acres of agricultural lands across 27 states as of last year, according to USA data.

GNC Holdings appeared on the Awards Management System-Federal Registration for Government Contractors-in 2023 and 2024, although it was not required to register because of her long-term concessions.

The company did not reveal its Chinese ownership on the website, and allows it in October 2024.

Despite these concerns, bankruptcy judge Karen Owens agreed to sell $ 770 million. Since then, GNC has benefited from a renewed interest in health and wellness to develop its mark for more than 4000 stores in the United States and 2000 international, according to the company’s website.
