Lawmakers in deep blue state demand audit over skyrocketing healthcare costs

A group of Republican lawmakers in California requested an official audit of the state’s Medicaid program, known as Medi-Cal, after its costs increased dramatically after the law entered into force last year, allowing illegal immigrants to register.
The Medi-Cal program is $ 2.8 billion on the budget, as it was originally expected to cost $ 6 billion in this fiscal year. Since then, the ruling office has requested $ 6.2 billion in separate loans.
“On March 12, 2025, the ruler informed the legislative body that Medi-Cal was insolvent and could not continue to pay all its obligations to health care providers,” the letter said.

“Despite the disturbing nature of this problem, the ruler failed to provide an explanation for the reason that the costs of Medi-Cal are much greater than the budget distributed. Many are concerned that the continuous growth in the cost of Medi Cal for immigrants is not documented is a major driver to overcome costs,” the message continues.

Specifically, the letter asks about “future estimates to register immigrants who are not documented” in the program, as well as “cost -containing strategies” to ensure that they do not harm access to health care in California.

The governor of the state, Gavin Newose, said that illegal immigrants who are allowed to register in Medi-Cal is a “partial” part of the problem, but his office argues that the total health care costs have increased the costs of Medicaid program higher than expected in other states as well.
