Layoffs hit BNSF tech staff amid restructuring

BNSF Railway has registered a portion of technology service employees as part of the departure restructuring efforts.
While BNSF did not reveal specific numbers, it is believed that the cuts have affected 140 and 175 workers.
The Texas -based airline creates a section called “BNSF | Tech” as part of what it describes as “a strategic initiative to transfer the future of railway operations through innovation.” According to a statement prepared, this new organization will be instilled “with a new investment and an expanded team of software engineers that focus on building a safer and more intelligent railway.”
The company noted that “some technology services functions are reused or abolished” because the restructured technology department will have “a reduced dependence on contractors and third -party sellers over time.”
BNSF stated that “it is still committed to supporting employees affected by employee changes” and provides “applicable resources and professional transition services” for those affected by the demobilization of workers.
“We are actively based on several major situations, and additional employment will quickly suffer during the summer,” BNSF spokeswoman said in an e -mail to freight waves. “We expect most of the transition and employment plan will be completed by the end of this year with an additional employment continued until 2026.”
The restructuring of the technology department comes in the mixed financial performance of the carrier. While BNSF reported higher profits in the first quarter of 2025, it continues to face financial challenges. At the annual meeting of Hathaway on Saturday, the outgoing CEO Warren Buffett admitted these difficulties, saying: “The railway earns more than last year, but it does not gain what should earn it at the present time. But this is a solution and is solved.”
The US tariff war with China is also pressed on transportation providers. BNSF is the best transportation for local agricultural products for export, and also provides multimedia services from the Beach Port Complex in Los Angeles in southern California, where import shipments are expected to decrease by more than a third of the coming weeks.
Workers’ demobilization was first reported by Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
This is not the first significant decrease in the workforce in BNSF recently. The railway lay off more than 360 mechanical employees in March 2024.
