Malawi is heading into a presidential election as it grapples with fuel shortages and a cost-of-living crisis

In front of Malawi, the elections on Tuesday to choose a president, legislators, and consultants for local government, the first national vote since 2019 presidential elections was canceled and rewritten by a year due to the widespread violations.

What to know as residents in the country of South Africa, who wrestle with a lack of fuel and the cost crisis, made their votes.

The last vote

These elections are the same as the main candidates who faced the 2019 fraudulent vote. Peter Mottatika, who was then supporting, won this election against the closest competitor, Lazaros Chakuerra, just before the court to nullify the victory of Mottatika and ordered the restart of months of protests in the streets. Chakuerra won new elections held more than a year later in 2020.

This was only the second time in Africa, as the court ordered the re -presidential elections, and the first time that it removed the job operator.

Chakwera is now the president and Motharica is his strongest competitor.

The Malawi Electoral Commission is subject to severe auditing to ensure free and fair elections this time. Mawtharika sparked controversy by choosing the former president of the election committee – who was severely criticized for the 2019 failed vote – as his colleague in running this year.

Candidates

Chakwera is a 70 -year -old former farewell coach and seeks one second term as an economic crisis that controls Malawi, one of the poorest and less developed countries in Africa.

Mutharika is 85 years old and has a long history in Malay politics, after he served in the cabinet during the time when he was his older brother, Pingo and Mottatika, president from 2004-2012. Then Peter Mawtharika held the position of president from 2014-2020. He is now taking another shot on the leadership even though the court finds evidence of fraud in his 2019 victory, including the reformist liquid used to change voting sheets.

There are 17 candidates in Total Standing For Presentent, including Joyce Panda, who was the leader of Malawi from 2012-2014, between the brothers Matrikika. She was the Vice President of Bingo and Mawtikika and finished his mandate after his death.

Big issues

Agricultural -based economy in Malawi suffers part in part due to a series of climate shocks such as hurricanes and dehydration. The inflation increased from about 8 % to 27 % during the Shakura period. Daily foodstuffs such as the essential atom cannot be tolerated for many in the non -coastal country, which includes about 21 million people, installed between Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique.

The decisive shortage of fuel also means that waiting lists at gas stations, which are part of life now, may be longer than waiting lists at voting stations on election day.

How to work

The elections will be held in one day and the results must be announced within a week of opinion polls. Malawians will vote for the president, 229 parliament makeup, known as the National Assembly, and more than 500 advisers in the local government.

Malawi changed its electoral law after the 2020 elections, and this vote will be determined with a coordination of 50 %+1 – which means that the winner needs to obtain more than 50 % of the votes.

Analysts see a strong possibility that no one will get the majority in the first round of voting, forcing the possible surface running round and another vote that puts chakwera and Mutharika against each other.
