Maryland governor to consider bill creating slavery reparations commission

The Maryland Bill, which creates a committee to study and recommend compensation for potential slavery now on the Office of the Democratic Governor Wes Moore.
The lawmakers in the old state developed the draft law to Moore after the state’s house approved 101-36 voting. Moore said that he will consider the legislation, according to Associated Press.
In the draft law, potential compensation is described as official statements of apology, cash compensation, tax discounts, social service assistance, including assistance in homes, work incentives, child care, debt tolerance, and academic fees.

The procedure, which was a top priority for the Black Black Gathering in Maryland, seeks to study the continuous effects of racial discrimination in the state.

“The committee will study and evaluate a set of compensation proposals that will not only be considered in the financial recovery, but it will also explore strategies to support and raise weak societies that are still suffering from the excellent effects of discriminatory practices rooted in systematic racism.”

Moore, the first black ruler in Maryland, did not say if the procedure will be signed – he only considered it.

He told reporters: “I have long stated that the history of racism in this state is real,” adding that the effects “are still very physical and that they felt structurally inside Maryland.”
Nevertheless, the ruler said that the state is suffering from a difficult budget and has the growth of Maryland’s economy when it is presented.

Maryland is not the first country to look at such legislation. California lawmakers passed last year’s draft law that led to an official apology for previous racist policies, the return of the land, or the compensation for the families that the government has unlikely.
Also, last year, legislators in New York City approved legislation with goals to study the city’s role in slavery and consider compensation for the descendants of slaves.
