Maximising the impact of our breakthroughs

The application of our research from artificial intelligence to help enrich the lives of billions of people around the world

Building useful products with new technologies has always been one of my greatest fur. As a boy, I spend hours connecting resistance, condensate and other electronic components with wires. First, I will assemble the Morse icon circle. Then dismantle the circle, reuse its wires and components for a temporary construction. Then dismantle the timer and build an amplifier. Electronic electronic components provided an ideal tool for small minds, such as me, for construction and construction.

Soon I was designing the processing chips in my first summer function in Marcony, the communications giant. This led to the study of electronics and programs at the university, where, during the laboratory days, we will build circuit boards for radio reception devices. Now, we have pocket-sized computers and huge data centers-and they are related to light speed communications-running strong programs for companies, societies and consumers worldwide.

But it is artificial intelligence (AI) that carries the greatest possibility of humanity. This technology learns and is repeated, with the ability to solve problems at each turn. When it is combined with human creativity and direction, artificial intelligence can discover new solutions to the challenges of humanity, quickly and a measure that could not be previously imagined.

Artificial intelligence is not noise-the final tool may be for general purposes. As the chief official of business (CBO) for one of the world’s leading companies, I see and feel, every day, how this technology can enrich the lives of billions of people around the world.

Finding the best ways to use artificial intelligence to build useful products is a major axis in my work and my life today. The subject of conversation is often the subject of my external connections with business leaders, members of the product and engineers – like the next keyword at the top of artificial intelligence devices for this week.

Removing research from the laboratory

My main focus like CBO is to take our advanced search breakthroughs and match our techniques to solve daily work problems. This intersection is tremendously exciting because in many cases, we are working in an unknown area, as it provided tools that carry a promise to solve problems for billions of people around the world.

It is often asked, as a research institution facing in the future, why is it important to work on global challenges that affect people every day? One of the things (but not the only thing!) That makes DeepMind very special is our ability to bridge artificial intelligence research to hundreds, if not thousands, from the prefabricated problems of Amnesty International that affects billions of people.

One of the largest libraries for artificial intelligence solutions has been created in the world, and we have the parent company, Alphabet, has an amazing market for problems that must be solved. Together, we are able to focus on the most difficult technical challenges with the largest payments, and create useful products that help billions of people in important moments.

For example, we helped extend the battery life for phones for Android operating systems, which are used by more than a billion people every day. This can be the savior, especially in times of need. It has been one of the most importantly required problems to solve, and it will become increasingly important as a cleaner and more green world.

One of the biggest challenges and opportunities to work in this field is to find ways to benefit from the potential of artificial intelligence while ensuring that our work is safe, moral and comprehensive at each stage, from research and development to application and influence.

In recent years, we have moved from talking about our work potential to actually benefit from billions of people on a daily basis. Now we are at the stage where we apply Amnesty International the Nobel Prize in Science and Society.

Benefit from people’s lives on a large scale

But with a lot of capabilities, where does one start? To ensure that our work is applied in the most effective ways, we start looking for basic challenges and transformation that, if solved, can help address many other competencies through a wide range of problems.

One of our most prominent examples of this is Alphafold, the artificial intelligence system that can accurately predict protein structures, blocks of life. With this system, we helped solve this 50 -year -old challenge in biology, which now helps scientists around the world develop their work.

We have also worked in areas such as sustainability, especially given the methods in which AI can help improve energy production and consumption. For example, we created the AI system that can control plasma in the nuclear fusion process, which may lead to the production of safer and cleaner energy. It has also helped reduce energy consumption in Google’s massive data centers, improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions. These developments are games changes on how to manage energy and use it in society.

Likewise, Muzero has shown a lot of potential to save time and energy on a large scale. It was initially built to advance in games intelligence and is now helping to enhance YouTube experience. Nearly seven hundred thousand hours of YouTube content is displayed every minute. This is an amazing amount of traffic on the Internet. By improving the ways in which videos are compressed, for example, we have reduced data use and energy use and helped increase access to video content all over the world.

Looking at the future

Amnesty International is undoubtedly the most transformative technology of our time. This exceptional promise also requires exceptional care. Expect the possible effects of general technology and transformation such as artificial intelligence is really difficult, and careful consideration is very necessary.

For this reason, we created a long -term scientific road map to help direct our research. While we go to this trip, we constantly evaluate the long -term effect of our work to ensure its spread in a safe and responsible way.

We need to have the smartest minds that work carefully, step by step. This is very big, very important to move quickly and break things, which is why the leader with responsibility is at the heart of everything we do.

It is incredibly inspiring to be able to really communicate with a wide range of problems that our work helps to solve, and the possibility of having enormous benefits for humanity, with we reach billions of people around the world. For me, this mixture is really unusual.
