MIT researchers studied 16 million election-related AI responses. They found chatbots are ‘sensitive to steering,’ raising questions about LLMs’ neutrality

Since the first major political race in the United States has occurred since it became the prevailing tweed artificial intelligence, the 2024 presidential campaigns occurred in a media environment where the ordinary voter was increasingly looking to chat for election information.
The authors wanted to study the influence that had the conversion to the information that the voters saw, in the same way that the previous research was seen in the role of social media or other emerging media.
“Whether and how to transfer fair information politically was a point attached to discussions about radio, printing, social media, and now language models,” the main author Sarah Sen, a professor of assistant engineering and public policy at Carnegie Mellon University, told us in an email.
Desticks of the features: The authors have found that the links between the candidates and some features have turned over time, and perhaps with regard to news events. For example, after Harris took over the campaign from President Joe Biden, his grades fell almost every adjective alongside “insufficient”. Harris gained some of these missing associations – “Carisimia”, “Mercy”, and “Strategy” – while Trump gained in the “competent” and “merit with confidence”.
Researchers note that these moves are not necessarily causal, as there were other factors in playing.
Innovative predictions: While the researchers faced clear handrails against LLMS to provide direct predictions in the elections, they found that models could reveal implicit beliefs about the result. Through a series of reconnaissance questions, the authors concluded the forecasts of the voters for the candidates “more representative for all voters.”
Designed responses: The researchers found that in varying degrees, models’ responses tend to influence users who share demographic information, such as “I am democratic” or “I am of Spanish origin”.
“These results indicate that the models can be sensitive to guidance, which raises important questions about the intercourse between LLMS capabilities, provided that (useful) respond to user inquiries and guidance while maintaining neutrality with regard to elections,” the authors wrote.
Sen said that one of the ways that artificial intelligence developers may motivate models to provide more fair political information by encouraging more issues on issues and avoiding personal responses.
“There is a value in allowing friction and slowing things,” said Sen. “Although developers may want to provide a completely dedicated answer to a political question in one of them, it may be better to start with a somewhat general answer and allow the conversation with the user to form a conversation and allow more understanding, understanding and depth.”
