Mitsubishi recalls 200,000 Outlander SUVs over rearview camera malfunction

Mitsubishi Motors North America recalls nearly 200,000 electric SUVs in Outlander and Outlander because of the wrong programs that can make their rear vision cameras.

The auto industry company said in a national traffic safety management report (NHTSA) that the information and entertainment system within more than 198,900 Outland models from the model years 2022-2024 and Outlander Phev SUVs from the years of the model 2023-2025 can “freeze or display a black screen”.

This may cause “losing” the image of the rear vision camera during the backup, which may increase the risk of breakdowns and make SUVs that are likely to be influenced by compliance with a federal organization about the back vision, according to the NHTSA recall report.

Mitsubishi connects the problem to the “improper software programming” in the information and entertainment system.

The summons report indicated that the summoned SUV was produced in early February 2021 and in late December 2024, while Outlander PHEVS is likely to be manufactured between late September 2022 and April 2025.

Calling “replaces and expanded” a former Mitsubishi summons issued in May 2023, according to NHTSA.

The summons report said that the case at the call center did not lead to any known injuries or deaths.

Outlander and Outlander PHEVs will receive a message in the mail about the summons at the end of June.

They will get instructions to take their car to an agency, where the information and entertainment system will be reprogrammed inside the car with a “antibiotic program”, according to the summons report. The service will not cost customers anything.

“Cars that were previously repaired under the summons of 23V345 will need to complete the new treatment,” NHTSA indicated.

“The affected clients will be notified from this month, and we will encourage anyone who receives a notice of contacting the local Mitsubishi Motors trader – it does not have to be the agency from where it has been purchased, any Mitsubishi Motors agent can help – as soon as possible when receiving the notification to update software to Applied to Build.”

In recent months, other car manufacturers have called vehicles to address problems related to the rear camera.

Volvo put about 413,000 cars in the United States under a summons to a problem that could cause a backup camera to be displayed in early May.

In April, the Porsche North American Car Company recalled more than 8,500 of the electrical transmission operations in Makan 2024-2025, citing issues that could affect backup cameras.

Mitsubishi has a web page where the owners can enter the VIN definition number (VIN) to see if the car is subject to a summons.
