Mora Says Zurdo Doesn’t Need Tune-Up For Benavidez
Sergio Moura doesn’t think Gilberto Ramirez needs a tune-up fight before defending his cruiserweight titles against David Benavidez next May.
Ramirez is scheduled to face Benavidez on May 2, 2026, hoping to capture the WBA and WBO cruiserweight belts. The match will come almost a full year after Ramirez’s last appearance, on June 28, 2025, when he defeated Leonel Dorticos, after which he underwent surgery on his right shoulder.
This time period sparked debate over whether Ramírez should reappear in a warm-up fight before facing one of the most physically demanding opponents of his career.
These questions were heightened earlier this winter when discussions briefly surfaced about a January match against Robin Zero, a fight that was eventually abandoned. The episode added urgency to the otherwise fluid conversation as Ramirez continued to recover while Benavidez’s appointment remained steady.
Mora does not see the layoff as a reason for hesitation. Speaking on Chris Mannix’s YouTube channel, Mora said Ramirez’s size and experience as a cruiserweight give him an advantage, even after undergoing surgery. He also pointed out the adjustments Ramirez has made since his loss to Dimitri Bivol in 2022.
Since that defeat, Ramirez has fought with more movement and patience, relying less on constant pressure and more on footwork and spacing. This shift has been evident over his four fights since, and Moura believes this makes him better suited to deal with Benavidez’s aggression and powerful punching style.
Mora also mentioned the importance of timing. The Cinco de Mayo battle weekend in Las Vegas brings a vision that’s hard to replace. From his point of view, delaying the match or slowing it down by adjusting the performance could lead to losing the result. On that date.
Benavidez has already expressed interest in pursuing Artur Beterbiev after May. Moura pointed out that a loss elsewhere could reduce the appeal of a future meeting with Ramirez.
Moura eventually sided with Ramirez, noting his natural size at cruiserweight and questioning how Benavidez would carry the extra 25 pounds. The real question is: Will Ramirez’s surgically repaired shoulder hold up?
